For years, many freight brokers relied on a short carrier-qualification checklist: active operating authority, sufficient insurance and no Unsatisfactory safety rating -- That is no longer enough.

When severe weather interrupts operations and cash flow, some insurance providers may give affected motor carriers additional time to pay their commercial auto premiums. A recent notice from Progressive Commercial illustrates how this can work.

Following the severe storms, flooding and tornado activity that began in Indiana on August 11, 2026, Progressive announced that affected customers could receive payment leniency through October 19, 2026.

Why Is FMCSA’s Crash Data Is Being Questioned?

In July 2026, following a ProPublica/WBUR investigation into crashes involving Transdev, Senators Cantwell and Markey asked FMCSA to explain what it was doing to verify the completeness and accuracy of state-reported truck and bus crash records.

The issue was attribution. The crash appeared under a contracting agency, transit authority, municipal department, or legacy company rather than the organization operating the bus.

That distinction matters because FMCSA uses carrier-specific crash and inspection records to identify companies that may require warning letters, investigations, or other interventions. If a crash is missing, delayed, or assigned to the wrong USDOT number, the regulator may not see the same risk pattern that the carrier, insurer, customer, or public would see from a complete record.

So, how can fleets trust FMCSA data as they try to improve their safety story? We find out.

⚠️ ONE WEEK UNTIL BRAKE SAFETY WEEK ~ The 2026 Brake Safety Week begins Aug. 23. Before dispatching your trucks, complete one final review of your vehicles, drivers and maintenance records.

This week’s checklist:

✅ Conduct a final brake-system inspection
✅ Confirm every reported defect was repaired
✅ Review pre-trip and post-trip procedures with drivers
✅ Make sure drivers know how to report a brake problem
✅ Organize vehicle inspection and maintenance records
✅ Verify that no truck or trailer has an overdue service item

Remind drivers to look for cracked drums or rotors, heavy rust, metal-to-metal contact, damaged air lines, air leaks and changes in braking performance.

A rushed pre-trip inspection can result in hours of roadside downtime. Take the extra time now to make sure every unit is ready.

🔧 2–3 WEEKS UNTIL BRAKE SAFETY WEEK ~ Have all the brake defects identified during your initial fleet inspection been repaired?

Now is the time to verify the work - not assume it was completed.

Review each truck and trailer for:

✅ Open repair orders
✅ Repeated brake adjustment problems
✅ Uneven brake wear
✅ Recurring air leaks
✅ Cracked or heavily rusted drums and rotors
✅ Missing maintenance documentation

If the same wheel end keeps developing problems, do not continue treating the symptom. Ask a qualified brake technician to identify the underlying mechanical issue.
One unresolved defect could lead to an out-of-service order, delayed delivery and lost revenue during Brake Safety Week.

CNS can help small carriers identify safety-process gaps before an inspector does.
