75 years of Pebble Beach, and the lawn still sets the standard.

4 days in Monterey with the people who restore, collect and deal these cars. Fog at dawn, the 18th fairway fills at sunrise with the finest cars in the world sitting on the grass waiting on the top prize: the Best of Show award.

For the 75th, it went to the 1935 Duesenberg SSJ Special Speedster, one of two ever built and once owned by Clark Gable.

John Hennessey, in his own words, on the car that just broke cover at The Quail.

The Blackbird is Hennessey’s third hypercar. Instead of chasing another top-speed record, it goes with a naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 built with Ilmor, a gated six-speed manual, rear-wheel drive, and a cabin with zero screens. 800–850 hp past 9,000 rpm. Under 3,000 lbs dry. 0–60 in 2.5.

The name is a tribute to the SR-71 with the chine line down the flank comes straight off the plane, and the active vertical stabilizers deploy at 71 mph and sit at ±71 degrees. 71 cars will be built. $2.5M each. Two-thirds already allocated before it was ever shown in public.

RM Sotheby’s was off to a fiery start on the first day during Monterey Car Week. Thankfully the Delahaye vintage racer was not damaged.

Most of the headliners this evening were pre-war cars which excited with new records, including $9,080,000 paid for the ex-Clark Gable 1935 Duesenberg.

We look forward to the next 2 days of auctions where more records are expected to be set!

Pebble Beach spent 51 years rewarding perfection. In 2001 it added a class for dust, rust and cracked leather.
Twenty three years later a 1934 Bugatti Type 59 Sports won Best of Show. Still in the black paint King Leopold III of Belgium put on it. First preservation car to ever take the lawn.
The Preservation Class turns 25 this Sunday, at the 75th Concours. 🕰️

The Pebble Beach Concours did not always celebrate historic cars. For the first five years, the most prestigious classic car show on earth judged brand new cars. Then Phil Hill showed up with a 24-year-old Pierce-Arrow, the very car he learned to drive on, and changed everything. 🏁

You look down at it.

Two fans. 23,000 rpm.
4,400 lbs of downforce while parked.

1,000 hp. 2,980 lbs. One seat. 0–60 in 1.55 seconds. 3g through a corner.

Laguna Seca, August 2024 A Spéirling ran 1:18.4 on half power and half downforce. The production car record there is 1:24.16.

But that was the prototype. This one is 95% new parts. 100 kWh instead of 60. Longer and wider. As far as we know, nobody has run it against the clock yet.

100 will be built. £995,000 each. Two a month. Track only. No plates, ever.

The fastest car here is also the cheapest one to fly due to its compact size. 7 cubic meters crated. A Revuelto is 11.7.

In 1950 a car builder named Sterling Edwards wanted somewhere to prove a car he’d built himself. So he asked the company that owns the Del Monte Forest to close its roads and let him race on them. They said yes.

No track. Hay bales for guardrails. Ten thousand people came and stood ten rows deep at the edge of the tarmac. A 23-year-old named Phil Hill won it in a Jaguar XK120, eleven years before he became America’s first Formula One world champion.

The car show was an afterthought. Around 30 cars on the practice tee so the crowd had something to look at between heats. Best of Show went to Edwards for the car he’d built. He’d rather have won the race.

They ran it again the next year, and the next. Then in 1956 Ernie McAfee went off at turn six and died, and racing on those roads ended for good.

That’s where it gets interesting. The death didn’t kill the racing, it moved it. Laguna Seca was built the following year to give it somewhere safe to go. And the little car show carried on without it, out on the golf course, and turned into the most famous lawn in the world.

Seventy-five years later both halves are still running, in the same week, on the same peninsula. The Reunion at Laguna Seca. The Concours at Pebble Beach. The auctions, the Quail and everything else grew up in the space between them.
One weekend in 1950 split in two and became the best week of the year for cars.

The 75th Concours runs Sunday, dedicated to the race that started it.
