Hello all! As we mentioned in our last post, Tim and I have moved on to other ventures. I'm happy to announce that my new venture, Atlantic Traditional Boatbuilding LLC, is now fully formed and off the ground. We have a busy year ahead, with a lot of interesting work that I'm looking forward to sharing with you all.

If that interests you, check out on Instagram or Facebook. Thanks!

Greetings, friends and followers!

We have big news to share. After six fantastic years of great projects and amazing experiences, Garett and I have decided that it’s time to dissolve Clark & Eisele Traditional Boatbuilding and begin our next respective chapters. Personal and individual professional goals are what drive this decision, but fear not! Garett and I will continue to work together in the future when it makes sense for us and our individual situations. We have built our reputation for high-quality work, passion for our trade, and dedication to our clients together, and we are eternally grateful to each other for the mutual support that brought us to this level of recognition.

Garett’s new company is Atlantic Traditional Boatbuilding, and he will focus on the restoration and maintenance of large, heavily constructed historic working schooners and the like. He will lead crews of shipwrights in the care of several of America’s most recognized and beloved educational vessels, but also offer general wooden boatbuilding services near and far.

I will be operating primarily as an individual under the company name, T.R. Clark Boatbuilding & Restoration. My goal is to build and restore smaller vessels close to my home of Midcoast Maine most of the time, but also to work as an independent shipwright on larger vessels occasionally as well.

We will soon establish new contact information and/or social media accounts, websites, etc., but in the meantime, we’d like to say THANK YOU to all who have provided support, encouragement, compliments, recommendations, and business in our time as Clark & Eisele.

Garett and I both have some very exciting projects lined up, so please stay tuned!

Here are a few photos from a spectacular sunset sail on the 1894 Essex fishing schooner Ernestina-Morrissey.

The famous bark, USCG Eagle, was also present at anchor just outside of Portsmouth. Their crew gave us a shout and a wave as we tacked back and forth under her stern with the Isle of Shoals looming behind us.

To add to the fun, we also saw the Portsmouth gundalow sailing by with her enormous lateen sail. A bit funny to the modern eye, but they were once quite commonly used for inshore and river work. It's reassuring to see so much traditional sail in 2024.

Under main, fore, jumbo, and jib, Ernestina made an easy 6-7 knots in about a 10 knot breeze. Even though conditions were benign, it was hard not to get a sense of how capable and powerful a sea boat this schooner is.

Thanks Captain Krihwan & crew for taking us out 🙏. It sure felt good to sail a big boat again.

Today, BELLATRIX (ex WATER RAT) was launched for the season in Belfast, ME at .

This classic "Downeast Cruiser" was built by Bunker & Ellis on Cranberry island in 1956, just south of Mt. Desert Island. We spent some months last winter replacing bottom planks and recaulking.

Additionally, we also replaced the bottom half of the transom, which had rotted and was leaking. It was fun to match the varnished mahogany veneers and try to "hide" the repair as much as possible. Can you find the repair?

Thank you to Front Street Shipyard for inviting us to help out on your project, and compliments to the painters, letterer, mechanics, and yard crew who made it come together so nicely.

She’s really starting to look like a lobster boat! Peter Buxton and I are making good headway on MAGGIE-ANN as we finish up decking, ceiling, and the spray rails and quarter guards. Pete has begun building the cabin trunk and shelter this week, and that is coming together very quickly. It’s very satisfying to see such a crucial (and final!) component of the boat materializing. Lots of planning had to happen as Pete strayed from the designed cabin structure to meet this client’s needs.

Our time on Ernestina is coming to a close:

- The crew has started bending on sail.

- The topmasts that we built for
last year are to be swayed in to the rig next week. Then she'll be proper.

-Thanks to for grinding almost the entire quarter deck in two big days.

- 2nd mate Chuck strikes the ensign while he still can.

- The new fife rail is nearly ready to be installed.

- Finally, it was a good milestone to drive the mast wedges in to the completed partners for the last time 👌

As Garett and Daniel wrap things up on Ernestina-Morrissey down in New Bedford, I am steadily at work way Downeast with Peter Buxton as we continue making progress on the new lobster boat. Soles and decks are being laid, engine and rudder assembly are fully installed, seams are puttied and topsides faired, and a host of other details. Soon we will begin building the cabin trunk and shelter. This project is being featured in a video series called “How to Build a Wooden Boat, Plank-on-Frame Lobster Boat” by Off Center Harbor, and there are presently seven episodes available to view. So check out offcenterharbor.com to follow along!

More photos from our mast partner repair on Ernestina-Morrissey.

- The decking repairs are complete and we finally got to finish caulking, which is what we originally came to New Bedford to do in February.

- We got the first of many coats of oil on the deck after some fairing and sanding, and then stood around looking at it for two hours, which is inevitable.

- The mast partners have been installed from below, and are now complete. I wont be missing the big overhead glue-ups, but this was really satisfying to build. All of the shaping and fitting and scarf cutting was done using a plastic garbage can as a sawhorse. 🤫

It will be time to button things up and head back to Maine soon enough!
