Rachel Smith Pottery Exquisite, elegant, functional stoneware
Wheel thrown and slab built

Inspired by the colors, textures and patterns in the world around me, my pots are a delight to own and use. Fired to stoneware temperature in a gas kiln, the pottery, with cool, grey, clear, rich dark navy and textured ash glazes, is decorated with a variety of abstract and nature images. Using sponge stamps of my own design and sumo brushes, I pattern the pots with subtle greens, blues, gold, brown, black and grey.

I’m back from the Clifftop show in West Virginia. The laundry is done, the damp canopy is dried out and put back in the van.
The show went well, and I had the great pleasure of many conversations with friends.
I learned that a customer gifted these pillow vases to some of her friends, and they send photos to each other with their current flower arrangements. Here are some! What fabulous colors!

These were heading to be round, but on the way to round they were more interesting at this point. Vaguely gourd shaped. They will be at Camp Washington Carver WV. Known to old time musicians as Clifftop, it will be nearly a week of camping, music making, concerts, dancing and competitions. My pottery booth will be in the normal spot, across from the food booths. Set up on July 28, open the 29th through August 1st. Take a break from jamming and visit!

I have a slow start to the year, as I have eliminated a few shows, and my March show in Chantilly lost their venue. Finally back from a Seattle trip to see family, and a Florida trip for family and friends, I have been making work in preparation for a summer show, and working to fill orders.
Putting work on my website means unearthing pottery from storage in my van, which I just started yesterday, it’s a bit like archaeology! But a few things are in easy to find boxes, like these flower pillows. First made in 1999, they are still fun to make. The explosion of spring flowers inspired me to take photos and do the several hours to put them on my website. rachelsmithpottery.square.site

In Seattle, visiting my family, I enjoy going to Lander Street Vintage. I always see pottery from friends that I knew when I lived there, and have often said I’ll see one of mine someday. Well, today was the day! I picked it up and yelled to my sisters, I made this! The woman whose stall it is, was there, and she very kindly said I want you to have it! Thank you Mary! Definitely from the early 80’s. Oribe inspired.

This is the last show of the year for me. I’m at the Morristown Armory in New Jersey. A little snow last night, possibly more Saturday night and Sunday morning so drive carefully! My booth number is C 311, and we open at 4 pm. It’s a short day, closing at 7pm. Saturday 10-5, Sunday 10-4. Im nearly set up, need to put flowers in vases and some arranging, then I’m ready!
Thanks to all who have purchased from me this year! I’ll have a couple of months to visit family, get my taxes sorted and rest a bit, then I’ll start making. I have promised to update my website when I have time, and if you have requests let me know. I should start firing work sometime in March, have to make enough to fill the kiln first!

It’s the last day of my home show in Lexington NC. The last show of the year is this coming weekend in Morristown NJ at the Armory. December 12-14, it is an Artrider show and is always full of beautiful work.
Go to their website for more details and tickets. https://www.artrider.com/holiday-craftmorristown-2025
I will have a good selection of functional stoneware, a couple of these new slab vases, hanging sculptures and masks.
I am usually in the middle area of the show, we don’t know booth numbers in advance, but there will be that info as you enter.
I will refresh my website in February, not too much on it now, I’ve been busy at shows!

It’s Friday, and I’m happy to report that there is no snow or icing happening near me, rain, yes.
I’m open a bit early, this is what you’ll see when you drive up. My sign, the dirty white van, the canopy with the front flap partway down and the entrance to the side. I’ll open the front all the way when it stops raining. Park in the driveway!
Come inside and have some hot tea or a latte while I wrap your purchase!

I set up this week for the next to last show of the year. As my invitation screenshot says, it’s in the driveway again! (Ignore the statement that its my last show of the year, its the next to last)Save yourself from another mall visit, easy parking, great selection. And it’s in Lexington North Carolina (a couple of miles north anyway) so you can pick up some barbecue (except Sunday)
