New reporting from Aviation Week suggests that NASA may be quietly exploring a return to flight for SR-71A NASA 844—the Blackbird that made the final flight of any SR-71 on October 9, 1999.

Earlier this year, the aircraft was removed from its longtime outdoor display at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center and moved into a hangar, where it was reportedly inspected.

According to Aviation Week, NASA has also reached out to former SR-71 personnel about potentially assisting with the effort. Two former Blackbird test engineers confirmed that they had been contacted.

The development comes as NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman has spoken about rebuilding the agency’s X-plane portfolio and getting NASA back to flying higher and faster. When asked at AirVenture whether he had the authority to bring the SR-71 back, Isaacman offered an intriguing response:

“That’s classified.”

For now, however, nothing is official. NASA has not publicly confirmed that a return-to-flight program for NASA 844 exists, stating only that it has no additional information to share about the aircraft at this time.

After more than a quarter-century on the ground, could one of the fastest aircraft ever built be preparing to fly again?
