First day of fall — and if you're running anywhere near the Rockies, chain law's been live for three weeks already.
Colorado's Must Carry Law requires all commercial motor vehicles to carry chains from September 1 through May 31, regardless of what the weather's doing that day. It applies to anything over 16,000 lbs combined weight, on I-70 west of Morrison to the Utah border, CO Highway 9 between Frisco and Fairplay, Route 40 west of Empire, and several other corridors.
Hotshots — this means you too. Pickup trucks pulling trailers that hit the weight threshold have to carry chains. Two tire chains for single rear wheels, four if you're running duallies. This gets missed constantly by non-CDL operators who assume the law is only for big rigs.
Fines run $500 for not carrying, and up to $1,000 plus surcharge if you end up blocking the road because you couldn't chain up.
Wyoming runs its own two-level chain restrictions that can drop at any time on specific corridors. Know before you go.
While you're at it, the rest of the fall checklist:
Tire tread depth — check it now, not in December
Wiper blades and winter-rated washer fluid
Battery load test before the first cold snap kills it
Coolant freeze point verified

Diesel hit an all-time record this month. $6.28 a gallon national average as of September 14 — up nearly 70 cents in two weeks and about 70% higher than this time last year.
There's no sugarcoating that. It's brutal, and anyone telling you otherwise isn't driving.
But here's what's also true: this industry has been here before. June 2022 set the prior record, and prices came down from it. Fuel markets are cyclical by nature — tight inventories get rebuilt, refineries come back online, supply disruptions resolve. Nobody can tell you exactly when, and anyone who claims they can is guessing.
What we do know is this: rates are moving too. Dry van averages climbed again last week, and carriers who hold their rate floor are the ones positioned to actually benefit when the fuel side eases.
The drivers who make it through stretches like this aren't the ones who got lucky. They're the ones who tightened up what they could control — fuel efficiency, idle time, route planning, and refusing to haul below cost just to keep moving.
This won't last forever. Nothing in this market ever does.

This one goes further than most. A dedicated Truckers Lounge, open 6 AM to 10 PM, with free truck parking, walk-in showers, laundry, a full kitchen, TVs, and hotel discounts for drivers. Grab a bite at Joe's Outback Grill, open 24/7, or head to Backwoods Bar for a cold b**r with live DJ or band most Friday and Saturday nights. There's also an indoor pool if you want to actually unwind, plus 70,000 square feet of casino floor if you're feeling lucky.
Most resets look the same — lot, food, phone, sleep. This one's basically a destination.

A lot of detention pay never gets collected — not because it wasn't owed, but because nobody documented it well enough to fight for it.
The clock starts at your scheduled appointment time, not whenever you physically pull in. If your appointment was 9 AM and you got there at 8:45, detention starts at 9, not when they finally call your number.
Get your check-in timestamp in writing. A text to your dispatcher, a photo of the check-in kiosk screen, anything with a real timestamp. Memory doesn't hold up in a dispute — documentation does.
Know your free time window. Most rate confirmations specify 2 hours free before detention kicks in, but it varies. If it's not stated, ask before you're sitting there guessing.
Detention applies both ways — sitting to load and sitting to unload both count. Don't assume it's only owed on one end.
A verbal "we'll take care of you" isn't an invoice. Get the actual detention time confirmed, then submit it as its own line item — don't just hope it gets folded in.
Follow up fast. Submit detention claims within 24-48 hours while the timestamp and details are fresh, not three weeks later when nobody remembers the specifics.
Detention pay exists because your time has value even when the truck isn't moving. Collecting it just takes treating it like the real money it is.

This one's simple: thank you.
Over 3.6 million professional drivers move more than 11 billion tons of freight across this country every year, and more than 80% of U.S. communities depend entirely on trucks to get what they need. No rail line, no barge, no backup plan — just someone willing to drive.
Dry van, flatbed, step deck, hotshot. Every load you've hauled, every 2 AM call you've made, every mile you've run when it would've been easier not to — it matters more than this industry says out loud often enough.
This week's theme is "From Highways to Homes," and that's exactly it. Everything on every shelf, in every driveway, at every job site — it got there because someone chose to show up and drive.

Fall's almost here, and it's been a good stretch.
It's easy to keep the foot down when things are working — more miles, more loads, more momentum. But today's worth pausing for. Take a breath. Sit outside. Enjoy the season changing instead of just noticing it through a windshield.
Whatever you've built this year — the truck, the business, the reputation — you built it. That deserves a moment where you actually feel it, not just check it off and move to the next thing.
Balance isn't the enemy of hard work. It's what makes the hard work worth doing.
Enjoy today. The grind will still be there tomorrow.
