Cargo theft numbers soared in 2020, and they still have not reverted to pre-pandemic levels. Even without significant year-over-year jumps, loads are more at risk now than they were just a few years ago.

There were 1,285 reported cargo thefts across the nation in 2021, according to CargoNet. Companies weathered a cumulative loss of $57,906,276 related to these incidents.

How to prevent:
🟢Establish good policies and procedures such as a red zone policy
🟢Consider a security es**rt
🟢Choose the right insurance partner

Canada’s long-awaited ELD regulations will be enforced beginning Jan. 1, 2023. Is your fleet ready?

Rules requiring electronic logging devices in Canada officially came into effect June 12 of this year, but most provinces and territories were not prepared to begin enforcement at that time. Instead, they implemented a period of “education and awareness” that saw roadside inspectors advising drivers on the need to comply as of Jan. 1, 2023.

That hard-enforcement deadline is now right around the corner. As of the first of the year, fleets operating in Canada must have installed and activated one of the Transport Canada-approved devices, even if the fleet is based in the U.S.

National Tank Truck Carriers and American Trucking Associations reaffirmed their support for utilizing electronic shipping papers in hazardous materials transportation in comments filed Oct. 23 in response to the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration’s request for information regarding hazard communication alternatives.

The two trucking associations first petitioned the agency to “without delay” develop rulemaking that allows motor carriers to use electronic documents for hazmat shipments in a joint letter to PHMSA in November, 2020, as their members sought ways to reduce physical contact between individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year, the focus of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) International Roadcheck Week was on wheel ends. Out of the top 10 vehicle out-of-service violations, tires ranked second, and wheels came in seventh. Of the 18,213 total vehicle out-of-service violations, there were 3,374 out-of-service tire violations, accounting for 18.5% of all vehicle out-of-service violations, and there were 784 wheel out-of-service violations, which is 4.3% of all vehicle out-of-service violations.

Combined, wheel end (tire and wheel) violations accounted for 22.8% of all out-of-service vehicle violations throughout North America. Over the three days of the Roadcheck Week, CVSA-certified inspectors conducted 59,026 inspections and placed 12,456 commercial motor vehicles and 3,714 commercial motor vehicle drivers out of service.

With the price of fuel these days, organizations everywhere, from coach bus companies to long haul truckers, need to do everything they can to improve fuel economy. Factors like brake quality, keeping transmissions in good working order and maintaining tire pressure is important, but many operators overlook an important factor, namely, rolling resistance and choosing the right tire for the job.

Choosing the right tire

When looking for a tire to help improve fuel economy, the first job of any fleet supervisor is to consider the application and job function their vehicles will be used for. While most tires these days are designed for performance, a great tire being used in the wrong application may not achieve the results you’re looking for. With this in mind, it’s important to ensure that the tires you purchase are the right size, with an appropriate load range to handle a bus or rig’s gross axle weight rating.
