Remember the caboose? Conrail cabooses were seen quite frequently in the early days of Conrail. Seen here is a Conrail bay window caboose on a westbound freight train passing by the Lewistown Junction on August 15th, 1977. This photo was taken by Barry Trogu.

Enjoy!

In the 1950's, the Pennsylvania Railroad began operating diesel locomotives and taking steam locomotives out of service. Here is a picture of a westbound PRR Steam Locomotive leading a train in 1954 past the Lewistown Junction.

Seen here is Pennsylvania Railroad E7A number 5879 leading an eastbound train past the Lewistown Junction. The 5879 was build by EMD in 1949, and was later Penn Central 4239. These locomotives lasted until the 1970's, when they were sold for scrap. One survives today numbered 5901 in the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. The exact date of this photo is unknown, but it is believed to be in the 1950's.

Seen here is a Pennsylvania Railroad T1 leading a train past the Lewistown Junction. The date of the photo is unknown, but it was between 1942 and 1952. The T1's were designed for power and speed for PRR passenger service. Two prototypes were built in 1942, and 50 more were built in 1945-1946. Unfortunately, the PRR placed diesel locomotives on all passenger trains in 1948, moving these steam locomotives to secondary train service. Some were taken out of service in 1949, and all were taken out of service by 1952. None of these engines were preserved and all were scrapped between 1951 and 1956.

Today, there is a group trying to build one of these lost pieces of history from the ground up, and hopefully we will see one of these steam locomotives passing by the Lewistown Junction again someday.

Here is a photo from a local Lewistown collection that has not been seen by many. The exact date this was taken is unknown, but it was between 1942 and 1944.

Seen here are families saying goodbye to loved ones at the Lewistown Junction as soldiers are heading to WWII. A Pennsylvania Railroad passenger train can be seen parked in front of the station as soldiers board. A bus can also been seen at the station reading "State College" across the front. If you look under the roof of the station, a band can be seen playing (most likely the Tressler Boys' Band, which at the time was a well known band across Pennsylvania that was local to Lewistown and under the direction of the well known Palmer Mitchell). Also, to the left of the crowd, soldiers can be seen with guns.
