Friends of the Lowville & Beaver River Railroad

Friends of the Lowville & Beaver River Railroad The Lowville & Beaver River Railroad was born in 1906. Our hope is to give it another hundred years. However the L&BR name lives on.

As the quintessential New York State Shortline Railroad, the Lowville and Beaver River Railroad was born in 1906. Originally a hauler of latex, chemicals, paper, lumber and feed, the railroad today remains out of service as former customers shutdown, moved production to elsewhere in the country or deferred to other modes of transportation. The rail is still in place and the potential exists for a re-birth.

Lewis County’s controversial rails to trails proposal is headed for a vote next week.

The L&BR as we have known it to be for the past 20 some odd years is changing. The future looks bleak if you've been paying attention to the news. Our hope is to save as much of this railroad as possible and preserve it so that an identified private entity and a non-profit historical society may partner up and reactivate the railroad following examples of other similar scenic railroads in these United States. While this page started as purely an attempt to catalog the uniqueness of the railroad, we lost many of the people who ran the line and had the photos and could tell the stories throughout the years. Thankfully many of the GVT employees who took care of this little railroad are still with us to share their experiences. Stay tuned, stay awake and watch this page.

We are looking for car numbers for the 2 fmr. Canadian National commuter coaches that lived on the L&BR for a few years, as well as that same info for the RF&P coach that can be seen in the cover/banner photo. Thanks!
