Wildlife poses a daily threat to aircraft (in 2019 there were over 17,000 bird strikes in the US alone). Controlling wildlife is a necessity at airports around the world - Leesburg Executive Airport is no exception. Leesburg’s Airport Operations team uses several tactics to clear wildlife from the runway, one of which is a battery powered propane cannon. This electronic propane cannon (AKA the bird cannon) provides regulated sonic blasts effectively clearing wildlife from the runway environment and is triggered by remote control as needed by airport personnel.

Tech Tuesday: Have you noticed the line of strobe lights off of Battlefield Parkway flashing at night? These are known as the omni-directional approach lighting system aka the ODALS. The ODALS helps pilots line up with the centerline of the runway who are landing at night and in low visibility conditions. Pictured here is an example of one of our ODALS lights!

Tech Tuesday: Most people know a windsock is used to tell wind direction but did you know they also approximate wind speed? Depending on where a windsock bends, a pilot can approximate the current wind speed. For example: one that is “straight out” indicates at least 15 knots of wind while one that has an 1/4 bend indicates approximately 6 knots.

Throwback Thursday: Leesburg’s municipal airport got its start in 1918 when a World War I plane landed in a grassy field on Wallace George's farm. This impromptu airstrip, known as “George’s Field,” became popular with barnstormers in the 1920s. For a fee, pilots would take people for short rides over the Potomac River. Located near the present-day Manor Apartments on Edwards Ferry Road, George's Field became a privately-run airfield known as the Leesburg Airpark following World War II.

Tech Tuesday: It’s finally cold enough to snow and our sweeper is ready for it! This 2001 Oshkosh Sweeper has an 18ft wide broom and two side blowers to “eliminate” snow from paved surfaces. In addition to the sweeper, we have four pieces of snow removal equipment ranging from a Case loader to a Ford F-250 which work in tandem to clear snow as quickly as possible.
