Tech Tuesday: Building a hangar is a lot like playing with an erector set! All of the structural steel is cut to precise lengths, labeled, and sent to the building site where a contractor “follows the directions”. Pictured here is the final product!

Tech Tuesday: Most people know a windsock is used to tell wind direction but did you know they also approximate wind speed? Depending on where a windsock bends, a pilot can approximate the current wind speed. For example: one that is “straight out” indicates at least 15 knots of wind while one that has an 1/4 bend indicates approximately 6 knots.

Throwback Thursday: Leesburg’s municipal airport got its start in 1918 when a World War I plane landed in a grassy field on Wallace George's farm. This impromptu airstrip, known as “George’s Field,” became popular with barnstormers in the 1920s. For a fee, pilots would take people for short rides over the Potomac River. Located near the present-day Manor Apartments on Edwards Ferry Road, George's Field became a privately-run airfield known as the Leesburg Airpark following World War II.

Tech Tuesday: It’s finally cold enough to snow and our sweeper is ready for it! This 2001 Oshkosh Sweeper has an 18ft wide broom and two side blowers to “eliminate” snow from paved surfaces. In addition to the sweeper, we have four pieces of snow removal equipment ranging from a Case loader to a Ford F-250 which work in tandem to clear snow as quickly as possible.

Tech Tuesday: Weather plays a huge role in aviation and can make or break a decision to fly. Leesburg Airport’s weather station is one of many thousands across the country that pilots depend on every day. Its instruments report 24/7/365 and include cloud heights, temperature, dewpoint, visibility, pressure, humidity, wind, lightning, and precipitation type. Visit the link below for a live look!

Tech Tuesday: Leesburg Executive Airport has 70 LED runway lights that help pilots keep their bearings at night and in low visibility weather. Our airfield lights are pilot-controlled meaning they can be turned on by “keying” the pilot’s microphone in bursts of 3, 5, or 7 clicks, depending on the brightness required.

Tech Tuesday: Airport taxiway and runway centerlines fade over time, just like roadway lines, and must be repainted occasionally. Have you ever noticed the reflective dashed lines on highways when driving at night? Airport centerlines are similar, using tiny glass beads that are set into the wet paint. The “ride-on” painting machine in this photo does it all – the driver is able to line up precisely with a laser, apply fresh paint, and drop tiny glass reflective beads all in one pass.

Today we'd like to tell you a little bit about Aero Elite Flight Training, another one of our flight schools here at the Leesburg Executive Airport. They welcome every flight lover, from brand-new students to experienced aviators, into their close-knit pilot community.

If you've never flown before, consider the schools Discovery Flight where one of their highly knowledgeable and friendly flight instructors will guide you through the pre-flight safety check prior to taxi and takeoff.

The experience includes 30 minutes of ground instruction and 30 minutes flight time. Your flight instructor will handle the take off and landing. Everything else will be in your control, and your flight instructor will be standing by to coach you.

The instructor will explain the flight controls, the flight management system, how long it takes to get each type of pilot’s license and rating, how to rent an airplane, and much more.

Following this flight, you'll be introduced to a number of flight training programs. Attaining a private pilot’s license is the first step in aviation. You can level-up your PPL flying skills by seeking an instrument rating or becoming a certified flight instructor.

Today, we'd like to feature Aviation Adventures, one of our flight schools here at the airport. Their mission is to provide their pilots with the best flight instruction value in the national capital region by conducting safe, professional flight instruction in well equipped, well maintained airplanes in a fun, club-like environment.

Aviation Adventures began in June 1989 with one Cessna 172 (N61803) and one instructor (Bob Hepp), operating off of the public ramp in Lawton, Oklahoma. In November 2003, they gained the approval from the Town of Leesburg to open a Flight School at the Leesburg Executive Airport and have continued to expand their flight training operations ever since.

Flying with Aviation Adventures begins with an introductory flight lesson. The school also offers a number of seminars designed to keep you well informed. Learn more at http://m.aviationadventures.com/.

Happy Monday! This week, we'd like to put the spotlight on our flight schools beginning with OpenAir.

As a Cirrus Platinum Training Partner, OpenAir’s training programs and instructors have been personally trained and evaluated by Cirrus training specialists.

The first step in the training process is a discovery flight, which allows you to have a 1-2 hour introductory flight lesson so you can experience the joy of flying an aircraft for the first time. Casual and pressure-free, it’s a great place to start when considering a private pilot’s license.

The next step would be earning a private license. Prepare to spend 4-6 months with a flight instructor as you learn the basics for confident flying.

After earning your private pilot license, you can begin instrument training. Adding this rating is a worthwhile investment, which rounds out your piloting skillset and unlocks some privileges that allow you to fully utilize your aircraft's capabilities.

If you are considering aviation as a career, OpenAir can help you take the next step with your commercial license. Want more details? Visit https://www.openairft.com/.

The Town's airshow is tomorrow and while we're busy prepping, we'd like to introduce you to one more staff member here at the Leesburg Executive Airport.

Joey Weant is our second airport operations and maintenance specialist. Similar to his partner in crime, Joe Straubs (featured Thursday), Weant does a little bit of everything when it comes to airfield and building maintenance.

This includes making sure the runway surfaces remain smooth, the lights are operative, and foreign objects are non-existent. He also helps with plowing the runway in the winter time in addition to mowing. At the end of the day. it's all about customer service!

Weant says he enjoys the fact that each day is different.

"I enjoy not always doing the same thing every day," he said.

Joe Staubs has worked for the Town of Leesburg for 11 years. He joined the Leesburg Executive Airport, Town of Leesburg about six years ago where he serves as the airport operations and maintenance specialist.

Some of his responsibilities includes runway inspections, which involves making sure the surfaces remain smooth, the lights are operative, and foreign objects are non-existent. He reviews a checklist daily to make sure the runway is safe for landing.

Staubs also helps with plowing the runway in the winter time in addition to mowing, building maintenance...he basically does it all!

When asked what he enjoys most about his job, Staubs says it's the fact that everyday is a new challenge at the airport.
