👀 Have you noticed this video at the DMV recently?

If so, you're seeing part of the Nevada Transportation Authority's ongoing campaign to raise awareness about illegal passenger transportation in Nevada.

Whether someone calls themselves a rideshare driver, private driver, taxi driver—or anything else—providing paid passenger transportation in Nevada requires the appropriate license or permit.

Why does this matter? Choosing an unauthorized transportation provider can mean important consumer and safety protections may not be in place, including required insurance coverage.

The Nevada Transportation Authority is working with partners across the state to help share this important message and ensure Nevadans have the information they need before accepting a paid ride.

🚗📺 And don't worry—you don't need to make a trip to the DMV to watch the video.

👀 Notice anything unusual at the airport this time of year?

If you've flown in or out of Reno-Tahoe International Airport recently, you may have spotted these warnings popping up near the exits. ✈️🏜️

As thousands of visitors travel through Northern Nevada for Burning Man, the Nevada Transportation Authority and Nevada Taxicab Authority are working to raise awareness about illegal passenger transportation.

🔥 Heading to Black Rock City? Know your ride. Know the law.

In Nevada, an operator who provides paid passenger transportation must be properly licensed or permitted. This applies whether someone calls themselves a rideshare driver, taxi driver, private driver—or anything else.

💸 Offering or accepting compensation for transportation without the required license or permit is illegal. Compensation can include money or other forms of payment or barter.

Why does this matter? Unlicensed transportation can put passengers at risk of an unvetted driver, an unsafe vehicle and limited or no insurance coverage or legal recourse if there is a crash or injury.

Whether you're heading to the playa or traveling anywhere in Nevada, before you accept a paid ride, make sure your transportation provider is properly licensed or permitted.

A big thank you to Reno-Tahoe International Airport for collaborating with us to help share this important transportation safety message with travelers.

And thank you to our partners at the Nevada Department of Business and Industry for supporting this ongoing public awareness campaign.

Heading to Black Rock City? Know your ride. Know the law.

In Nevada, an operator who provides paid passenger transportation must be properly licensed or permitted by the Nevada Transportation Authority or the Nevada Taxicab Authority (for taxis in Clark County).

This applies whether the person providing the ride calls themselves a rideshare driver, taxi driver, private driver, or by any other name.

Offering or accepting compensation for transportation without the required license or permit is illegal. Compensation can include money or other forms of payment or barter.

Rideshare drivers offering rides outside their licensed digital application are breaking state law. Taxicab operators working off meter or private vehicle drivers offering paid rides without the required license or permit are operating illegally.

Why does this matter? Unlicensed transportation can put passengers at risk of an unvetted driver, an unsafe vehicle and limited or no insurance coverage or legal recourse if there is a crash or injury.

And if you're traveling to Black Rock City, remember that rideshare, taxi and other commercial transportation services have restrictions on where they can operate during Burning Man.

Before you accept a paid ride, make sure the transportation provider is properly licensed or permitted.

This is a joint transportation safety message from the Nevada Transportation Authority and Nevada Taxicab Authority.

Rideshare Surge Pricing Prohibited During Governor’s Declared State of Emergency

The Nevada Transportation Authority (NTA) is reminding transportation network companies (TNCs) and the public that surge pricing is prohibited during the state of emergency declared by Governor Joe Lombardo in response to the Bug and Fred Mountain Fires affecting areas of Washoe County and the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony- Hungry Valley.

Under NAC 706A.290(2), a transportation network company is prohibited, during a state of emergency, from charging a fare that exceeds the company's base fare. Accordingly, TNCs may not impose surge pricing during the state of emergency.

The restriction applies to transportation network companies operating within the area of the declared emergency. TNCs should ensure that fares charged to passengers in Washoe County comply with the applicable requirements for the duration of the state of emergency.

“During an emergency, Nevadans should be able to access transportation without facing increased fares based on extraordinary demand,” said Todd Park, Deputy Commissioner of the Nevada Transportation Authority. “We are reminding transportation network companies of their responsibilities and encouraging passengers to report suspected violations to the Authority.”

What passengers should know

🔵 Surge pricing is prohibited while the state of emergency is in effect.

🔵Review the fare displayed before accepting a ride.

🔵Keep a record or screenshot of the fare if they believe they have been charged a fare above the company's applicable base rate.

🔵Report suspected violations to the Nevada Transportation Authority.

The NTA encourages anyone who believes a TNC has charged a fare in violation of NAC 706A.290(2) to contact the Authority and provide information about the trip, including the date and time, TNC used, pickup and drop-off locations, fare charged and any available documentation.

The NTA will continue to monitor transportation network company operations during the state of emergency and will take appropriate action regarding reported violations.

🎲 DON'T GAMBLE WITH YOUR SAFETY.

⚠️ State of Nevada Transportation Authority and Taxicab Authority officials are warning riders and drivers about the risks of illegal passenger transportation.

That cash ride offered outside a rideshare app, taxi service, or licensed transportation provider may seem like a quick way to save money—but the consequences can be significant.

🚗 For passengers:

You do not know who you are getting into a vehicle with. Has the driver undergone a background check? Has the vehicle been inspected to ensure it is safe?

Passengers who accept rides from unverified drivers may be giving up important protections. In the event of a traffic crash or injury, they may have limited or no legal recourse for compensation.

🚨 For drivers:

Providing unauthorized passenger transportation can result in fines of up to $10,000 and immediate vehicle impoundment. Drivers may also be personally responsible for injuries, property damage, and other costs if an accident occurs.

⚠️ Before accepting or offering a ride, make sure you understand the risks.

✔️ Use an authorized taxi service, licensed transportation provider, or rideshare app
✔️ Verify the driver and vehicle information
✔️ If something feels off, don't get in
✔️ Drivers should ensure they are properly authorized before providing transportation services

🎲 Don’t gamble with your safety this EDC weekend.

As thousands travel to Las Vegas for EDC, Nevada transportation agencies are reminding drivers and passengers to use only properly licensed transportation services.

High demand and surge pricing can increase the risk of illegal passenger transportation activity, including off-app cash rides and unauthorized transportation services.

Passengers should:
✔ Use licensed taxicab companies or authorized rideshare apps
✔ Verify vehicle and driver information before entering a vehicle
❌ Avoid accepting cash rides from individuals soliciting passengers at airports, hotels, or event venues

Drivers operating illegally may face significant fines, vehicle impoundment, and additional legal liability.

One cash ride. Real consequences.
Off-app is off-limits.

Headed to the Playa? Don’t Get Burned by an Illegal Ride!

As you plan your trip to Black Rock City,
don’t rely on ride offers from online ads.
These rides are often illegal and unregulated.
Instead, choose a licensed ride-hailing app or
a certificated bus carrier. That way,
you’ll know the driver passed a background check
and the vehicle meets safety standards and
insurance requirements.

Ride smart. Ride safe. Ride legal.
