What happens when a city breaks a century-old tradition?

Liberty Place,
📍Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

In 1987, Philadelphia’s skyline changed forever with the completion of One Liberty Place. Standing 945 feet tall, the skyscraper surpassed Philadelphia City Hall, which had dominated the skyline for decades beneath William Penn’s statue.

Its arrival marked a controversial turning point for a city long guided by the unofficial tradition that no building should rise above William Penn whilst other cities soared overhead. With its distinctive blue-glass façade and striking pyramidal crown, One Liberty Place ushered Philadelphia into a new era of modern skyscraper design.

The change also inspired the legendary “Curse of Billy Penn,” a sports superstition linking the city’s championship drought to buildings rising above the statue.

Today, One Liberty Place stands as a defining feature of Philadelphia’s skyline, a reminder that architectural progress often means challenging tradition.

The sky’s the limit! Save this landmark for your next Philadelphia trip.

POV: one building, a thousand compositions. 🏛️

Philadelphia City Hall
📍Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Completed in 1901, Philadelphia City Hall is an architectural masterpiece of Second Empire design, crowned by a towering statue of William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania.

For decades, an unofficial tradition held that no building in Philadelphia should rise higher than Penn’s statue. That changed in 1987 when One Liberty Place broke the city’s long-standing height tradition.

Coincidence or curse? Philadelphia’s sports teams then endured years of championship disappointments, inspiring the famous “Curse of Billy Penn.” The legend gained renewed attention in 2008 when the Phillies won the World Series, shortly after a small William Penn figurine was placed atop the city’s newest tallest building.

With intricate sculptures, grand arches and remarkable details at every turn, City Hall is a must-see for architecture lovers.

Take the tour, discover the stories behind this iconic landmark and save it for your Philadelphia itinerary!
