May showers bring mock missions! 🌧️⛑️🛶

LSAR hosted a mock mission this morning on the Popo Agie that had it all: swiftwater team deployment, searching, medical patient, communication with cell phones/radios, tracking technology, IC logistics, litters, water crossings, etc etc.

Big thanks to our education leadership, watch command, IC team, and swiftwater lead for putting this together. 👏🏽

With the unusually warm and dry weather this winter and spring, trails are drying earlier than normal in the high country and hikers are getting out there. It's a good time to review some basics, like what to consider carrying on your hike. You should also remain prepared for variable conditions. A dry trail might eventually turn muddy, icy, and snowy depending on elevation and aspect.

Sun, wind, snow, oh my! We have had quite the weekend in Lander. ❄️ 🌞 🌬️

It was perfect training conditions for a Wilderness First Aid course. Members of Lander SAR, Park County SAR and Casper SAR learned about the patient assessment system, how to manage medical/trauma patients in the wilderness setting and got to develop interagency SAR relationships. ⛰️ ⛑️

Your donations from 2025 helped offset the cost of this course for eight SAR volunteers. Hoping to offer this annually for local SAR teams!

Thanks

An important read.
Please share.

“Search and rescue (SAR) missions aren’t all helicopter hoists and cliff hangs. During most rescues, SAR teams hike into the backcountry to help tired, cold, and underprepared people who planned to be back home by dinnertime.

Typical rescues aren’t epic, but rather the result of predictable mistakes: a late start, a minor injury, a forgotten jacket. Still, most people requiring help are surprised by the hardship they encounter in the woods.
“They haven’t thought through what happens if they have an accident or make a mistake out there,” Drew Hildner, a 23-year SAR veteran and field leader with the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, told Outside. “They’re only prepared to have the perfect day.”

The consequences of assuming everything will go smoothly can be serious.“
