For Captain Cole and Captain Brendan yesterday was not their average day of tows and jumpstarts. While moving boats around the marina Brendan noticed a large turtle near our storage building. He quickly called Matt Kovach, our wetland ecologist at Littoral Services, LLCLC and sent a picture. Matt quickly identified it as a blandings turtle and noticed it had a tracking device on its shell. He notified the Toledo Zoo, who came to check on her and will release her into a wetland area.
Shortly after heading out for the evening, they were called back to the boat to assist in call for a capsized vessel SW of Kelley’s Island. They completed shoreline searches alongside the USCG, ODNR, and Towboat US Sandusky. Two survivors were found near shore with the boat and transported to Marblehead. The 3rd survivor was located by Towboat US Sandusky and also transported to Marblehead. This is when collaboration and training make a difference.
