The Clippers didn’t lose Bennedict Mathurin — their roster got too crowded to keep him.

Per ESPN’s Shams Charania, Mathurin has agreed to a two-year, $16M deal with the New Orleans Pelicans, with a player option on year two. His reps withdrew his $8.8M qualifying offer from the Clippers to make the signing possible.

LA’s roster crunch built up fast this summer — they added Max Strus in the Peyton Watson trade, and the pending Kawhi Leonard deal to Toronto further reshaped the roster, leaving no clear path back for Mathurin at a price the Clippers wanted.

New Orleans, meanwhile, was reportedly the most aggressive suitor for Mathurin all summer, working to shed Jordan Hawkins’ contract specifically to create the cap room for this. Their offense ranked 20th in the league last season with no other major addition — Mathurin, who averaged 17.4 points and 5.5 rebounds after joining the Clippers, is the clearest fix that roster has gotten this offseason.

Head coach Todd Monken is expected to name his Week 1 starter Monday between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders. Through two preseason starts, the numbers are nearly even: Watson went 16-of-27 for 162 yards with an interception, while Sanders went 15-of-22 for 153 yards with a touchdown and two picks.

The complication: after a rough outing last week, Watson was booed by the home crowd and called the reaction “disrespectful,” pointing to fans cheering his 2024 Achilles injury on that same field. Monken says the comments won’t factor into Monday’s decision.

This one carries extra weight. Watson is in the final year of a fully guaranteed, historically criticized contract. Sanders already has a season of NFL starts under his belt. And Cleveland holds two first-round picks next year in a strong quarterback class — whoever wins this job is auditioning against that all season long.

Thompson has officially signed with the Heat after clearing waivers Sunday, a two-year deal (reports range $11.5–13M) with a player option in year two. The team made it official, with Pat Riley calling Thompson one of the most iconic players to ever suit up in the league.

The moment Miami landed Giannis Antetokounmpo, Pat Riley made shooting the top offseason priority — neither Giannis nor Bam Adebayo spaces the floor. Miami even passed on re-signing Bradley Beal, who left for the Clippers, to keep this exact plan alive.

It’s the Ray Allen role almost to the number — Allen shot 37.5% in his final Heat season doing this same job. Thompson’s at 38.3% in his last Dallas year.

Denver didn’t replace Peyton Watson — they bought a different problem to solve the same hole.

Per ESPN’s Shams Charania, independently confirmed by the AP and Chris Haynes, DeMar DeRozan has agreed to a one-year, $3.9M deal with the Nuggets — the veteran’s minimum. Jokić, Aaron Gordon, and Jamal Murray reportedly recruited him directly, and he chose Denver over a bigger offer from Miami.

Here’s the catch: DeRozan is 37, shot just 32% from three last season, and brings real defensive limitations at this stage of his career — nothing like the two-way wing production Watson gave this roster. Denver’s luxury tax bill climbs further too, with penalties now projecting to roughly $75 million.

At the minimum salary, this is close to a no-lose value add. But it’s a scoring fix for a defense-and-shooting problem, and the hole at the 3 that the Watson trade created is still open heading into camp.

The Mavericks and Thompson have agreed to a contract buyout on the final year of his deal ($17.5M). Per ESPN’s Shams Charania, he’s expected to sign with Miami once he clears waivers.

Dallas actually tried to trade him first — new president Masai Ujiri wanted assets back for a shooter of Thompson’s pedigree — but no partner ever bit at a price Dallas liked. A 36-year-old specialist coming off a career-low shooting season just doesn’t move the trade market the way he used to.

Miami reportedly chose Thompson over re-signing Bradley Beal, who left for the Clippers. The plan: a Ray Allen–style role spacing the floor next to Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.

A five-team deal (per ESPN’s Shams Charania) sends Watson and Cam Whitmore to Cleveland, with the Nuggets landing an unprotected 2031 first-round pick and a 2032 second in return. Watson signs a fresh four-year, $88M deal with the Cavs.

Here’s the part that should worry Nuggets fans: Watson just posted a career year — 14.6 points, 4.9 boards, and a 41% clip from three. Denver didn’t lose him because he wasn’t good enough. They lost him because they’re stuck over the second luxury tax apron and couldn’t match the money without crushing roster flexibility for years.

Cleveland fixed a real need. Denver’s banking on a pick that won’t even convey until 2031.

Devon Witherspoon just became the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history — four years, $132 million, $101 million guaranteed. But the real story isn’t the number.

This is Seattle’s second market-reset extension of the offseason, after making Jaxon Smith-Njigba the league’s highest-paid receiver back in March. Two young cornerstones of a Super Bowl-winning roster, both paid before free agency could turn it into a bidding war. Witherspoon earned it — he was the tone-setter on a defense that allowed the fewest points in football, and he personally delivered the hit that turned into a pick-six in the Super Bowl.

That’s a front office that watched itself win a championship and decided the fastest way to lose the next one is letting the cap get in the way of keeping the guys who actually won it.

The resume is Hall of Fame-certain: fourth overall pick in 2008, nine All-Star Games, the 2017 unanimous MVP award after averaging a triple-double for an entire regular season — a feat that hadn’t been done since Oscar Robertson in 1962. He broke Robertson’s all-time triple-double record and finished with more than 200 additional triple-doubles beyond it. He became just the second player in NBA history to reach 25,000 career points and 10,000 career assists, alongside LeBron James.

His final season with Sacramento: 15.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 6.7 assists per game at 37 years old on a 22-win team, before a toe injury in March ended his year. Eight franchises over 18 seasons. No ring.

The no-ring fact is the unresolvable center of the Westbrook legacy debate. Oklahoma City was a year away when Kevin Durant chose Golden State. Houston with Harden was a stylistic mismatch that never found cohesion. Los Angeles with LeBron and Anthony Davis was wrong from the start. Every time Westbrook was positioned for a championship run, something broke in a direction he couldn’t control. That’s not entirely his fault. It’s also not irrelevant to how history remembers great players.

First-ballot Hall of Famer in 2029 — no question. The bigger debate about whether he’s a “misunderstood generational talent” or a “cautionary tale about max contracts” is just entering its most important phase. Both arguments have real historical support. Neither one is complete.

The Zay Flowers extension is getting all the attention today — and it should. It’s $140 million for the Ravens’ most important offensive player and a move Baltimore had to make. But the real story behind the deal is what it reveals about Baltimore’s 2027 salary cap picture — and it’s not comfortable reading.

This spring, the Ravens restructured Lamar Jackson’s contract to create just under $40 million in cap space. The cost of that move: Jackson’s 2027 cap number climbed from $74.5 million to $84.49 million. Add Roquan Smith at $32.7 million, Nnamdi Madubuike at $31.5 million, Kyle Hamilton doubling from $10.7 million to $26 million, Mark Andrews climbing to ~$14.7 million, and the Flowers extension on top of all of that — and Baltimore has over $200 million committed to six players in 2027, in a league where the cap is roughly $300 million.

The one deal that could restructure all of this is a Lamar Jackson extension. Jackson doesn’t have an agent and has stated repeatedly that he won’t negotiate during the season. The window is the next four to six weeks — or it waits until March 2027, when Baltimore faces the full $84.49 million hit with no flexibility to work around it.

Every individual decision Baltimore made this offseason was the right call. Together, they’ve built a 2027 cap wall that requires one of two things: a Jackson extension, or a forced roster rebuild. Right now, only one of those has happened.

Travis Hunter told NFL Network he wants to play every snap this season — on both sides of the ball. His quarterback Trevor Lawrence confirmed it: “He’d play every snap on both sides of the ball if he was able to.”

Stop treating this as a gimmick story. Hunter’s rookie season before the knee injury — 324 offensive snaps with 28 receptions, 298 yards, and a touchdown, plus 162 defensive snaps with 15 tackles and three passes defensed in seven games — established that he can actually produce at both positions simultaneously in the NFL. That’s not a novelty. That’s a two-way player.

The camp footage this week makes it even clearer. In Sunday’s practice alone, Hunter produced an interception on defense and a 35-yard catch on offense within three plays of each other. He added 10 pounds of muscle this offseason and clocked 22.6 mph — one of the fastest speed readings in the league. Jacksonville even built a two-jersey system — teal for offense, white for defense — so he can switch sides between plays.

The real debate isn’t whether he’s talented enough. The debate is whether a 17-game NFL season with 60-plus snaps per game will let him do it sustainably — and whether the Jaguars will trust his instinct or protect against the history of what the NFL does to players who try this.

Watch him Thursday in the Hall of Fame game. That’s the first real data point.
