My Personal Review of:

🏨 OCCIDENTAL XCARET ALL-INCLUSIVE RESORT (Royal Level)
🇲🇽PLAYA DEL CARMEN, MEXICO

🏝️ Visited April 2026 w/my husband to celebrate our anniversary

✈️ Fly into Cancun (CUN) airport, then take approx. 50min shuttle ride to & from resort. We used the free shared transfer through the Barcelo resort, but it was just us in the shuttle on both the arrival & return so no extra time was wasted.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5-Star 💵💵reasonably priced all-inclusive family friendly resort, also has a separate adults only pool & a Royal Level section that includes extra perks like priority à la cart dinner reservations, a Royal only pool section & French restaurant, & free 24hr room service.

🏖️There is no traditional beach here, instead there is a sanded beach area around a private lagoon that is blocked off from the ocean with nets which helps to keep the seaweed out. You can still see the ocean & the beautiful ocean views, but the designated swimming area is only in the lagoon. It’s about 4-5ft deep in most areas, has pretty good areas to snorkel, & is much safer than the ocean since you don’t have to worry about huge waves & rip currents. We really enjoyed the lagoon even though a nice beach is normally on our “must have” list, but it was great to be able to be in the ocean & swim around without having to worry about the dangers that come along with the typical ocean beach. Great for families with young children.

🍴Food🍴
-2 buffet style restaurants that serve all meals, 5 à la cart restaurants for dinner reservations only, a snack bar restaurant for lunch, 2 restaurants (tacos & pizza) for dinner & late night dining, & the French restaurant for Royal Level guests serves all meals.

-We only ate at the main buffet one time for breakfast on our departure day. For all other breakfasts & lunches we ate at either the Royal restaurant or the Beach Club buffet, & had one lunch at the snack bar. We found the buffet food to be average resort/cruise type food. Nothing spectacular, but you can always find something to eat. The Beach Club buffet restaurant was our favorite because it had the best view of the ocean & we also enjoyed the ocean views from outside at the Royal French restaurant.

-Since we were Royal Level we were able to make reservations at check in for all à la carts except for the Italian restaurant which was really nice because we didn’t have to worry about not getting in to eat dinners at à la carts each night. Most of the à la carts were slightly above average compared to other resorts we have been to. Our favorite was the Oriental restaurant because the sushi was probably some of the freshest tasting sushi I have ever had.

-We did not like that there was no grab & go options during the day. Everything has to be ordered & consumed as sit down type meals, which isn’t very convenient when you are spending days at the beach or pools. We also felt like Pacos Tacos & the pizza restaurant should have been opened during the day instead of just at night.

~Room service food is available 24hrs for free if you are Royal Level, but otherwise it has to be purchased. It takes about 45 min to get food delivered. The room service food is not all that great, but it’s good enough to have a late night snack if needed. It’s definitely not worth having to pay extra for it though.

🍹 Drinks 🍹
~Miami Vice & mango margarita frozen drinks & the Scooby Doo & Mexican candy shots were all pretty popular. BlackBerry & strawberry mojitos were really good too. Ask for a specific brand of liquor so you don’t get the cheap stuff. Bring an insulated cup to have drinks put in to keep from having to make trips to the bar.
~Rooms have a fridge stocked with beer, soft drinks (Pepsi products) & water
~Since we were celebrating our anniversary we received a bottle of red wine & chocolate covered strawberries in our room on arrival which was nice.

🛌 Rooms 🛌
~We reserved a Royal level Suite which I didn’t realize would have a living room area with a separate bedroom & two balconies. It was way too big for just the two of us, but now we know if we want to bring the kids this would be a perfect room for the 4 of us. I was hoping to be in building 30 so that we could see monkeys on the balcony, but we ended up in building 31 with a partial ocean view. We were able to see monkeys in trees throughout the resort though which was amazing I thought was amazing to see.
~Buildings are only 3 stories high, we were on the 2nd floor, but there was no elevator so walking up & down stairs for some may be difficult.
~Some reviews said wash cloths were not provided so we brought our own. There were none provided at check in but once housekeeping saw that we had ours they provided a couple for us, so you can definitely request wash cloths at least in Royal level.
~Shampoo & body wash was provided although it was very thin & didn’t lather at all, so I would recommend bringing your own. There was no conditioner or lotion provided so we ended up having to buy travel bottles at the pharmacy which was around $6 each.
~Bathroom had a nice walk in shower & big whirlpool bath tub.
~Room was clean, AC worked well, bed was really comfortable, hammock on one balcony, and many nice extra touches like hair dryer, robes & slippers, & a scale which was great to be able to weigh bags before leaving.
~Room & bathroom lighting was terrible. Even with all the lights on in the bathroom my husband couldn’t see to be able to shave properly. If the balcony curtains were not open in the room during the day you could hardly see anything.

🤩Entertainment/Amenities🤩
~The entertainment was the best I have seen at any resort other than at RIU resorts. We saw Michael Jackson, the Circus show, Mexican, & Fantasy. Michael Jackson & Fantasy were my favorites, which normally I feel like the MJ shows are cheesy & Fantasy is Disney themed so I thought it would be mostly for kids, but I really enjoyed both of these a lot.
~There wasn’t a whole lot of scheduled activities during the day & the ones they did have we were either not interested in or it was more for younger kids.
~There is a night club/disco for 18 & up but we didn’t go because the last shuttle runs at 10:30 & the walk to Royal is REALLY FAR especially after a long day & drinks. This was our biggest disappointment at this resort.
~There is a gym/fitness center somewhere but we never saw it.
~Spa on site for extra $
~Excursions available from the resort or your transport company for extra $

WARNING for XCARET: If you plan to go to Xcaret park, buy the tickets online through Barcelo BEFORE arrival. We were told by past guests that we would get better prices for the unlimited pass if we got them at the resort & that was not the case. We were also tricked by one of the vacation club reps (we didn’t realize she was promoting the vacation club)….Right after we checked in she told us to go see her first thing the next morning because she had discounts for us since we were Royal level. We ended up wasting a good 3 hours on our first morning only to find out she had no discounts for us unless we went listen to the vacation club pitches & we did not want to do that. It was a whole mess after that having to get someone else to sell us unlimited passes because they were up charging way more than it was online. Also we personally felt like it was a waste to have unlimited Xcaret passes because we could have seen the whole park in a day & definitely didn’t need more than 2 days. Although it is a beautiful park, we preferred spending our time at the resort but that’s just our personal preference.

📝 Notes 📝
~Bring swimwear in carry on so you can go to beach/pool while waiting for room to be ready
~Be sure to put do not disturb on door when sleeping in morning or for naps
~Bring large yeti or Stanley cup to bars to fill so you don’t have to keep getting drinks & helps to keep drinks cold
~Bring a sound machine because hallways can get noisy
~Bring a damprid bag to hang in room to help with humidity

✅Overall Rating: On a scale of 1-10, I would give this resort an 8.5. The entertainment was better than most resorts, the lagoon was really nice, & the he wildlife on the resort was AMAZING to see every day! This is a great resort for families with kids of all different age groups. I wouldn’t suggest it as a couples or wedding vacation because there are a lot of kids. There is an adults only section but often times kids go in and it seems to go unnoticed by staff. Overall it is a beautiful resort, the à la carts were better than most & having access to Xcaret park from the resort is a bonus if that is somewhere you are interested in seeing.

My Personal Review of:

🏨 ROYALTON RIVIERA CANCUN ALL-INCLUSIVE RESORT (family side)
🇲🇽PUERTO MORELOS, MEXICO🇲🇽

🏝️ Visited August 2025 w/my husband & our 17 yr old son & 11 yr old daughter for summer vacation

✈️ Fly into Cancun (CUN) airport, then take approx. 15min
shuttle ride to & from resort. We used a shared transfer with Nexxus since the resort isn’t far from airport, but it was just our family when we are arrived & one other family left from our resort with us when we departed.

💴 💴 - 4-Star reasonably priced all-inclusive family friendly resort, also has a separate adults only section & Diamond Club section.

🏖️ Beach is not the prettiest in this area & July/August is seaweed season so the water was extra brown & murky. We still got in the water to cool off while tanning, but didn’t stay in long. There weren’t many people on the beach so chairs were easy to find & it was quiet & peaceful.

🍴Food🍴
-Only 1 buffet style restaurant that serves all meals, the rest is sit down a la cart dining & a couple food trucks that serve lunch until 5pm. The buffet was actually pretty good & specialty dining at night was average resort food. We found the appetizers at each restaurant were better than the main courses. One morning we had to stand in line at the buffet for a good 30 min just to sit down to eat a late morning, 10am breakfast, since the buffet is the only breakfast option.
~Dinner restaurants need reservations. I wasn’t able to check in on the app ahead of time so we weren’t able to make reservations until we arrived & didn’t have a huge selection on restaurants & times, but we still were able to get into a specialty restaurant each night we were there. Guest services can make reservations when you check in but it’s much safer to check in on the app & start reserving 3 days in advanced because guest services was not overly helpful in this area.
-Hibachi at Zen Teppanaki was our overall favorite restaurant & meal.
-For lunch & afternoon snacks at the Chef to Go food truck by the pools we liked the fried fish a lot. The Italian restaurant also serves sit down lunch with pizzas & pastas.
~Room service food available 24hrs. It takes about an hour to get food delivered. The room service food is not all that great, but it’s good enough to have a late night snack.
~There is also a Sports Bar that serves food later at night until 12am.

🍹 Drinks 🍹
~Mango or passion fruit margaritas were one of their specialty drinks. I used my 40oz Stanley & told them where I wanted the alcohol filled to & what else to put in it, otherwise they only put a splash of liquor. Ask for a specific brand of liquor so you don’t get the cheap stuff.
~Rooms have a fridge stocked with beer, soft drinks (Pepsi products) & water

🛌 Rooms 🛌
~We had a 1 bedroom Presidential Suite with a swim out & it was huge, around 1200 sq. feet, room 8115. There was a living room/kitchen area with a pull out sofa & they set up another roll away bed so our 2 kids could have their own beds. There was a small full bathroom w/shower for the kids, & a separate bedroom with a king bed, pull out sofa, & large bathroom with a double shower & a big whirlpool bath tub. The swim out didn’t get much sun but the water stayed cool which was really nice being that the water in most of the pools was really hot this time of year.
~Room was very clean, many nice extra touches like robes & slippers, steamer for clothes, & a microwave. We did not find anything wrong with our room, although maybe it’s because we were in building 8 which I believe has recently been remodeled.
~This room didn’t seem to get as humid as rooms in other resorts we have stayed at. The AC worked really well but apparently there is some sort of timer that randomly turns the ac up to 78 & shuts all fans & lights off. We couldn’t quite figure out why or how this kept happening & maintenance wasn’t very helpful. It was usually after we left the room during the day & after being gone for a certain time period, but if everyone didn’t leave the room together it would still shut everything off with someone still being in the room.
~Bed was nice &comfy
~Body wash/shampoo, & conditioner were provided

🤩Entertainment/Amenities🤩
~The entertainment was bad. We only saw one show & it was like watching a children’s play gone wrong. We did go to the silent party which was a lot more fun than we thought a silent party could be. There wasn’t a whole lot of scheduled activities during the day & the ones they did have we were either not interested in or it was more for younger kids.
~There is a night club for 18 & up that my husband & I went to for a while on our last night but it was small & a kinda raunchy atmosphere IMO.
~The gym/fitness center had a wide variety of workout machines & equipment that my son enjoyed.
~Kayaks, paddle boards, & hobie cat to use on the beach are NOT free like everywhere else we have gone to.
~Spa on site for extra $
~Excursions available from the resort or your transport company for extra $

👍🏼 Pros 👍🏼
-The size & setup of our room & the swim out were fabulous. It was like staying in an apartment instead of a hotel room.
-Room requests through app for amenities shampoo/soap/slippers/etc was quick…15-20min.
~No complaints with our room or getting service when needed.
~We scheduled family pictures outside of the resort with Greg & Claudia from Sunset Photo & I highly recommend them. They picked us up & returned us to the resort as a complimentary service & brought us to a local beach in Puerto Morelos for the pictures. We received 20 high quality professional digital images for only $130. It took about 2 hours with driving time included & the photos came out amazing!

👎🏼Cons👎🏼
~Our check-in was frustrating because we arrived at 5pm & were starving & since I wasn’t able to check in on the app prior to arriving we couldn’t get dinner reservations until 8:30pm, even though I had called the resort before we left & was told that since they were below capacity due to the remodel coming up reservations were not required. It was a completely different story at check-in though. We ended up eating at the buffet & then going to dinner again at 8:30 for a snack, so we made it work but it was a bad first impression since the front desk & guest services were kinda rude about it.
~Buffet doesn’t open for lunch until 12pm & breakfast closes at 11am, so between 11am-12pm there is nowhere to eat.
~Entertainment was disappointing & not very entertaining at all. Staff does not really try to get guests involved in many group activities.

✅Overall Rating: On a scale of 1-10, I would give this resort a 7.5. If the entertainment was better & beach area was nicer I would rate it higher. This is a great resort for families with kids of all different age groups, but better for younger kids. I wouldn’t suggest it as a couples or wedding vacation because there are a lot of kids, but I’m sure the adults only side would be more accommodating for couples. Overall it is a beautiful resort & I am sure it will be even more beautiful after the remodel which is starting mid August 2025, so it will be shut down for a few months. I got an amazing deal on this resort…$2400 for 2 adults & 2 kids w/flights out of Houston included for 4 nights in a 1BR presidential suite with swim out, so it was well worth the price we paid & we would definitely return at that price, but I wouldn’t pay much higher than that for this resort.

My Personal Review of:

🏨 PLANET HOLLYWOOD CANCUN ALL-INCLUSIVE RESORT (family side)
🇲🇽COSTA MUJERES, MEXICO🇲🇽

🏝️ Visited May 2025 w/my 17 yr. old son as a graduation trip

✈️ Fly into Cancun (CUN) airport, then take approx. 45 min
to 1 hour shuttle ride to & from resort. We used a private transfer with Amstar.

💴 💴 💴 - 5-Star Mid-level priced all-inclusive family friendly resort, also has a separate adults only section.

🏖️ Beach is beautiful. There is an entrance to the beach from each section of the resort…family, star class, & adults only. It seems to be separated for each section but it is a public beach so you can go to any section you prefer. We did not have issues finding tanning chairs because we went to the beach mid to late afternoons, but I can see busy times having a hard time finding chairs.

🍴Food🍴
-Only 1 buffet style restaurant that serves all meals, the rest are a la cart. We only ate at the buffet for lunch one day & breakfast our last day, buffet food is edible but not fabulous. However, there are plenty of options so anyone should be able to find something they like.
~Dinner restaurants need reservations. I believe you can still get in without a reservation but you would probably have a harder time getting in. I started making dinner reservations on the PH app 2-3 days in advanced & had no problem getting the time & restaurants we wanted each night. During our 5 night stay we were able to try every family side restaurant. Star class & adults only have their own restaurants.
-Steakhouse was typical resort food, not fabulous but still edible & filling.
-Indian restaurant was really good. I enjoyed the butter chicken dish with the jeera rice. This was one of my favorite meals because it was something I had never eaten before.
-Hibachi was our overall favorite restaurant & meal.
-Lunches we did either Guys Burgers or pizza. The burgers were small burger patties & pretty dry. We preferred the To Go pizza during the day from the Italian restaurant. Order 30 min ahead & before 4:30pm.
~Room service food available 24hrs. We didn’t use it during the days, but it takes about an hour after 10pm. The food is not all that great, but it’s good enough to have a late night snack. Be sure to be next to your room phone to confirm the order if you order through app or tv. TV seemed to be the best way to order, app normally said unavailable.

🍹 Drinks 🍹
~Mango or passion fruit margaritas seem to be one of their specialty drinks, other than that I drank mostly wine & Malibu w/pineapple, 7up, & grenadine. I used my 40oz Stanley & told them where I wanted the Malibu filled to, otherwise they only put a splash of liquor.
~Rooms have fridge stocked with beer, soft drinks (Pepsi products) & water

🛌 Rooms 🛌
~We had a standard room with a swim out. Room size was perfect for 2-3 adults, or 2 adults & 2 kids. We enjoyed having the swim out to get in to cool off or to layout when the beach was too hot. The water temp in the swim out end of May was perfectly cool & refreshing.
~Room was very clean, many nice extra touches like robes & slippers, steamer for clothes, a bathroom scale. If you waste time searching for flaws in the room furnishings you will find them, but it is absolutely not enough to ruin a vacation over.
~It is humid during the day, we used a damprid bag & night time was perfect. High speed fan over beds keeps air circulating & helps with humidity. No need for a humidifier & our room did not have a mold smell like others have complained about.
~Beds were nice & very comfy.
~Room 24118/Building 24 is in a perfect location, right in the center & close to everything. I’m glad we preselected this room & will select this building if we ever return to PH.
~Body wash/shampoo, & conditioner were provided

🤩Entertainment/Amenities🤩
~The entertainment was really lacking for us. There wasn’t a whole lot of scheduled activities during the day & the ones they did have we were either not interested in or it was more for kids.
~Micheal Jackson show was pretty cheesy, king of pop should not be the king of PH…lol, but it does get better towards the end.
~Most of the other night shows were geared towards kids.
~There is a night club for 18 & up but we didn’t go in since my son wasn’t old enough.
~Lazy River is perfect for kids of all ages & adults
~The gym/fitness center had a wide variety of workout machines & equipment that my son enjoyed.
~Kayaks, paddle boards, & hobie cat to use on the beach for free
~Spa on site for extra $
~Indoor trampoline park, Flowrider Surf simulator, Fast cars race track all for extra $.
~Excursions available from the resort or your transport company for extra $

👍🏼 Pros 👍🏼
-Everyone clapping at entrance upon arrival was very Hollywood like, greeted with a drink, escorted to room with bags & given a brief tour.
-Room requests through app for amenities shampoo/soap/slippers/etc was extremely quick…15-20min.
~No complaints with our room or getting service when needed.
~The layout of the resort is perfect. Everything is centrally located in the center of the resort & pools/water activities are all in the same area.
~LOVE the scale in the bathroom…I did not have to stress about bags being over the weight limit when going back to the airport🤣

👎🏼Cons👎🏼
~Buffet doesn’t open for lunch until 12:30pm & dinner at 6pm, so between 5-6pm & 11am-12:30pm there are very limited food options.
~Entertainment was disappointing & not very entertaining at all. Staff does not really try to get guests involved in many group activities.
~Could use more pool chairs & beach chairs.

~If you want to take chips & dip from the buffet to the pool or beach, do not go into the buffet from the hostess desk cause they will tell u that u have to eat there. Use a side entrance & be discreet. 😉

✅Overall Rating: On a scale of 1-10, I would give this resort a solid 9. If the entertainment was better I would easily give it a 10. This was one of my favorite resorts so far. It is great for couples, adults only, spring break/graduations, friend trips, or families with kids of all different age groups.

My Personal Review of:

🏨 RIU REPUBLICA ADULTS ONLY ALL-INCLUSIVE RESORT
🇩🇴 PUNTA CANA, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 🇩🇴

🏝️ Visited April 2025 w/a friend as a Girls Trip

✈️ Fly into Punta Cana (PUJ) airport, then take approx. 35 min shuttle ride to & from resort. We used a private transfer with Amstar & even got a free ride to the local gift shop provided by Amstar.

💵 💴 - Budget friendly all-inclusive adults only resort, w/huge party scene. RIU parties scheduled multiple nights of the week. Various ages of resort guests from 18-55 (or so).

🏖️ Beach is nice with tons of tanning chairs. Ocean is very rough in this area so red flags are posted most days to notify guests to take extreme precautions & not go too far away from shore.

🍴Food🍴
~Food was okay, not spectacular, but we found something edible wherever we went & was never left hungry
~Most meals are served buffet style except for dinner at the steakhouse which requires reservations
~Jerk chicken at the beach snack bar served during the day was fabulous (spicy but so juicy & delicious)

🍹 Drinks 🍹
~Drinks were mediocre, not strong at all (I think the liquor was diluted somehow), but they will make just about anything you ask for
~Rooms have bottles of vodka, rum, tequila, & whiskey on a pour spout, & fridge is stocked with beer, soft drinks (Pepsi products) & water

🛌 Rooms 🛌
~We had a standard room with a balcony which was pretty spacious for 2-3 people.
~The furnishings & quality of the rooms could use some serious updating. There was a moldy smell & humidity was an issue in the rooms, but it did cool off well at night & even got too cold some nights.
~Although the bathroom was clean, there was a smell of stale urine that seemed worse during the hotter parts of the day (I did check a couple other rooms because we thought about changing due to humidity in our room. The smells were better in the two other rooms I checked but the humidity was the same).
~Body wash/shampoo, & conditioner were provided
~No small hand towels provided, which we knew beforehand so we brought our own

🤩Entertainment/Amenities🤩
~The RIU parties are insanely crazy…fun vibes, high energy, djs, dance performers…W.I.L.D parties!
~ Each party has a certain theme. We were there for the white party at the Republica which was at night, & the Pink Pool Foam party which we rode a free bus to get to at another RIU pool complex. Both parties were alot of fun, but the Pink Party was our favorite…it was like something you see on an MTV video…we are not even big party/club people & still enjoyed it.
~There were a lot of pool, sports activities, & dance lessons during the day and staff does a good job of getting people involved in the activities.
~A water park area with about 6 water slides
~We didn’t use the gym/fitness center, but there is one on site.
~Spa on site for extra $
~Excursions available from the resort for extra $

👍🏼 Pros 👍🏼
~Greeted upon arrival with mimosas & bags were brought to our room
~The parties were something that should be experienced at least once in your lifetime, & we have aged out of the party stage but still had a blast as if we were in our 20’s again🤣
~Staff members are friendly & work really hard to clean up after everyone (which is a tough job cause some of the “partying” people can be pretty messy)
~Nightly entertainment/shows were really good compared to other resorts I have been to
-Lack of beach/pool chairs was not an issue here like at many other resorts
-Numerous pools with different vibes in each so anyone can find the atmosphere they enjoy
~Our room cleaning crew did special things each night like live flowers w/our curtains braided, animal towels, & blanket art on beds
-Water slides (at an adults only resort) are so much fun!
~The Jerk Chicken!😋

👎🏼Cons👎🏼
~Although they are cleaned well, rooms need to be updated/renovated…think newer model motel/studio 6 types of rooms…not totally disgusting, but very basic & outdated
~Moldy smell in rooms
~Beach is nice, but not really swim-able due to red flags most days
~Food & drinks are not the best

📝 Notes 📝
~Bring swimwear in carry on so you can go to beach/pool while waiting for room to be ready
~Be sure to put do not disturb on door when sleeping in morning or for naps
~Bring large yeti or Stanley cup to bars to fill so you don’t have to keep getting drinks
~Bring a sound machine because hallways stay really noisy
~Bring a damprid bag to hang in room to help with humidity (Humidity was an issue in rooms but at night it did feel much better so we were able to sleep comfortably…the damprid bag helped for sure)
~Ask your transport company (we had Amstar) about getting a shuttle to go to the gift shop & try the Mama Juana (it’s a drink, we ended up buying multiple bottles😬)

✅Overall Rating: On a scale of 1-10, I would say this resort is a 7. Overall the resort has nice facilities, the common areas are well maintained, & the entertainment/parties are phenomenal if that’s a scene that interests you. The rooms could use some updates & something to help with the moldy smell, but for the budget friendly price it’s still worth visiting.
