If you have been following the latest news in the trucking industry, you would know that there has been a significant decrease in truck prices. Specifically, the value of 3-year-old trucks has dropped by an enormous $55,000 since their peak only a year ago. As a result, a truck that was worth $140,000 is now valued at just $85,000!

North Dakota state lawmakers have revived the pursuit of higher speed limits on the state’s fastest roadways.

The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association says roadways are safest when all vehicles are allowed to travel at the same rate of speed. The Association does not advocate for a specific speed limit.

North Dakota law authorizes speeds of 75 mph on Interstates 29 and 94. Speeds along four-lane divided highways are set at 70 mph. Two-lane highways are posted at 65 mph.

The North Dakota House has advanced to the Senate a revived pursuit to increase speed limits on the state’s interstate highways.

January saw a dip in orders for Class 8 heavy-duty trucks, marking the fourth consecutive month of decline. Despite this, two industry analytic firms, FTR and ACT Research, say this doesn't indicate fears of a recession. FTR reports that orders remain above replacement demand levels and that fleets are not overly concerned about the economy. ACT Research similarly reports the dip in Class 8 truck sales as expected, given the robust orders at the end of 2022. Medium-duty truck orders, on the other hand, saw a 5% year-over-year increase, according to ACT.

Based on your own experiences or observations, do you think medium-duty truck orders being comparatively healthy is a good sign for the industry?

Even though there have been several months with sliding new Class 8 truck orders, analysts say don’t look at it as a sign of recession.

Connecticut lawmakers are considering over a dozen bills to eliminate the highway use tax on large trucks. The tax, which went into effect on Jan 1st, ranges from 2.5 cents to 17.5 cents per mile for trucks weighing between 26,000 to over 80,000 pounds. The Motor Transport Association of Connecticut is calling for a repeal of the tax, citing higher costs for trucking operations and goods, while Governor Ned Lamont and supporters argue the state needs the revenue to maintain its bond rating. The bills range from complete elimination of the use tax and fuel taxes to amending the frequency of filing returns.

Here's a picture of the receiver's facility, with available docks and all, but the trucks are still waiting in line for their turn. Who said that loading and unloading can't be fun?! 🤣
