Day 171 of being a full time nomad with no official or permanent home, traveling the world and living mostly on cruise ships. 🌎 🚢

I am still at the Kenai Princess Lodge in Alaska. I arrived yesterday and leave tomorrow to head toward McKinley Lodge. And I am sad I have to leave but also excited to see what's next!

When I arrived yesterday, I decided to book a tour through the excursions desk, which is not something I normally do. But given my remote location and the little time I have here, I wanted to make the most of it.

I chose a boat tour of Kenai Fjords National Park.

And boy, am I glad I did!

It was overcast this morning, so I was sure to dress warm and bring my rain jacket. It was about an hour long bus ride to Seward, which is where the boat tour departed from.

A woman named Molly, who is roughly my age, sat next to me on the bus. As it turns out, she's a solo traveler too!

We talked favorite trips, wildlife, birds, photography... all the things. She likes to hike though. And that's where she lost me. 🤣

Seriously though, she's a kindred spirit and I really enjoyed our chat.

The skies eventually opened up, and it made for a very wet and rocky boat ride. But you know anytime there was a wildlife sighting, I was out on that bow. Camera in hand. 📸

After a few hours, I was cold and wet, but I had made friends with Nancy and Dave and saw ALL the wildlife!

Alaska brought her A-game today!

Sea otters, orcas, harbor seals, Steller sea lions, moon jellies, Dall's porpoises and the absolute highlight...

PUFFINS! 😍

Both tufted AND horned!

I even saw a moose, but sadly, no picture. The bus was moving, so it wasn't exactly the easiest photo opportunity. But all the other passengers saw her too, so I am NOT making it up. 🤣

Everything was incredibly difficult to photograph because of the movement of the boat, but I'll share what I feel is worthy.

Oh, and I saw another glacier!

A BIG glacier. 🧊

And because we were on a smaller boat, we could get incredibly close to it.

I am so glad I booked this tour. And while I wish the weather had been better. Regardless, it was still spectacular.

Seeing and photographing puffins was a bucket list item for me. And we saw them FIRST! So honestly, I was ready to go home after that. 🤣

I've seen sea lions, seals, otters and whales before. But to get that close to a glacier AND have a pod of orcas swim under the boat?

Unreal.

Once again, Alaska has left me speechless. ❤️

For anyone new here... I'm living life as a nomad for one year, maybe longer if I can afford it. I live mostly on cruise ships but do some land travel here and there. I do not have a permanent home or apartment with associated bills anywhere.

I went through an ugly divorce and abruptly ended my career of twenty years after a corporate buyout. Now I'm on a journey to discover me again, as well as the world. 🌎

Follow along if you want to see where I wake up next!

That's it, I can die happy!

While I have not seen a brown bear yet, I did see a pod of orcas and puffins today and got up close and personal with a massive glacier.

I also checked another National Park off my list!

More pictures to come later!

☕️ Morning coffee thoughts with Genel…

You know how everybody says that if you're doing an Alaska cruisetour, you should do the land portion first and the cruise second so you can “relax on the cruise”?

I actually feel the complete opposite.

I'm really glad I did the cruise first and am finishing with the land tour.

Maybe it would be different if I were hiking a 10,000-foot mountain every day, but I'm not. 😂 For me, the cruise is actually the busier part. There are constantly things happening onboard, lots of noise and activity, and then I get into port and walk miles and miles trying to see absolutely everything because apparently I don't know how to vacation like a normal person.

So after a week of that, being on land feels like the reprieve.

Especially here at Kenai Princess Wilderness Lodge. It's SO quiet. No piazza. No announcements. No crowds wandering past. Just trees, mountains, the river, wildlife and a whole lot of peace.

And I am loving it.

Obviously, everyone travels differently, and there's no right or wrong way to do an Alaska cruisetour. Do whatever works best for you.

But for me?

Cruise first. Land tour second.

That's my two cents over morning coffee. ☕️🏔️

What about you? If you've done an Alaska cruisetour, which order did you do it in, and would you do it the same way again?

Day 170 of being a full-time nomad with no official or permanent home, traveling the world and living mostly on cruise ships. 🌎🚢

Today I traded the Discovery Princess for solid ground and officially started the land portion of my Alaska adventure!

After disembarking, I made my way to the Kenai Princess Wilderness Lodge, via motor coach. The driver radioed ahead to the lodge that he had 51 passengers. Guess who the "one" is? 🤣

Upon arrival I was greeted by Tracy manager of the lodge, and her dog Oliver. I know I told you all about Oliver already but he deserves to be mentioned again.

Once I got settled, I walked down the hill to the Kenai River and then back up for some lunch. Then I realized I had forgotten my camera in my room.

Naturally.

Because apparently a person who carries a camera almost everywhere and considers photographing birds a legitimate recreational activity can still walk all the way down to a river in Alaska without it. 🤦‍♀️

So... back up the hill to my room I went.

Back down the hill to the river. 🤣

By the time I headed down again around 5:30 p.m., there wasn't another lodge guest anywhere around. Just me sitting by the Kenai River, watching a couple of men in waders fly fishing while the water rushed past.

It was so quiet.

Exactly what I needed after the ship.

And because I am a bird nerd, obviously I photographed every feathered creature willing to come within range of my lens. 😂📸

I saw harlequin ducks, common mergansers and an american dipper

Eventually I dragged myself away from the river and made the trek back up the hill for what felt like the 47th time today.

I did not see any bears but tomorrow is a new day!

I grabbed a quick bowl of bison chili, which was absolutely delicious, and now I am tucked into my room and ready for bed.

You know what I can hear?

Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

And I love it. ❤️

This is much more my speed. ❤️🏔️

Hey kenaiprincesslodge , Princess Cruises you are going to have drag me out of here kicking and screaming when it's time to check out!

And I mean it's your fault. You have Oliver Atlas greeting and hanging out with guests. He alone will be the reason I never leave.

Seriously though...this place is great.

Okay...this is much better for me!!! So quiet, not many people around, a nice West Coast IPA, mountains, a river and the cutest dog ever.....Oliver.

Do I care I am sitting at this table alone surrounding by couples and families? Nope. Not. At. All. Perfectly content.

Gonna eat some food then go for a little nature walk. Then probably circle back to see Oliver again because, well...dogs! ❤️
