Boil Water Advisory Lifted for All Customers ‼️

Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities just announced that the boil water advisory has been lifted, effective immediately, for all customers. Laboratory testing has confirmed that water throughout all impacted areas of the distribution system is safe for consumption, and customers may return to normal water use.
 
The advisory was issued following a loss of system pressure that created the potential for back siphonage and the introduction of harmful bacteria into the water distribution system. This precautionary measure was necessary to ensure compliance with state regulations and reporting requirements while water quality testing was conducted.
 
In addition, repairs have been successfully completed on the damaged water main that contributed to the service disruption. Testing and evaluation of the newly installed section of pipe are currently underway. Results from those tests are expected to be available for review the morning of Saturday, August 1. Once testing confirms the line meets all water quality and operational requirements, the repaired main will be returned to service. 
 
Staff continue to monitor system recovery efforts, and customer water conservation remains important during this phase until the repaired main is placed into service.

“Providing safe, reliable water service is one of our core responsibilities, and our team recognizes that water is critical to public health, safety, and strength of our community,” said WSFC Utilities Director Courtney Driver. “Our employees work hard around the clock to maintain the system we all depend on. We will evaluate this event and implement improvements to further strengthen system reliability.”

Boil Water Advisory Rescinded for Portions of Impacted Area ⚠️

Water service has been restored to all Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities customers affected by the July 29 water main break. Effective immediately, the boil water advisory has been lifted for a portion of the impacted area after laboratory testing confirmed the water is safe for human consumption. ‼️ Customers in the remaining impacted area must continue to boil water until additional testing is completed and notice is given.

Water samples have been collected throughout the remaining impacted area, and test results will be confirmed on Friday, July 31. Additional information will be shared once those results have been reviewed.

Answers to frequently asked questions:

Drinking Water 💧
Do not drink water unless it has been commercially bottled or boiled. This applies to filtered water and ice from your fridge as well. Vigorous boiling for one minute is sufficient to kill any disease-causing organisms that may be present in the water.

Washing Dishes 🫧
If possible, use disposable plates, cups, and utensils during a boil water advisory. Sanitize all baby bottles.

Dishwashers are generally safe to use if they have a sanitizing cycle or reach a final rinse temperature of at least 150°F (66°C). Check the manual or contact the manufacturer to find out what temperature your dishwater reaches.

If handwashing dishes, only use boiled water or commercially bottled water.

Caring for Pets 🐾
Give pets commercially bottled water or boiled water that has cooled. Pets can get sick from contaminated water just as humans can.

Brushing Teeth 🪥
Brush your teeth using boiled water or commercially bottled water. Do not use tap water that you have not boiled first.

Bathing and Showering 🛁
Be careful not to swallow any water when bathing or showering.

Use caution when bathing babies and young children. Consider giving them a sponge bath to reduce the chance of them swallowing water.

Laundry 🧺
It is safe to wash clothes as usual.

Update on Water Main Break ⚠️

WSFC Utilities and contractor crews have been working continuously since the significant water main break that occurred on July 29. Crews worked throughout the night to assess the damage and begin repairs.

The damaged water main is located beneath a manmade pond in a remote area, making access difficult. During excavation, crews found the water main is approx. 40 feet below ground. The main has been successfully isolated, allowing excavation efforts to assess the damage.

Isolating the water main has enabled crews to restore operations at several critical facilities and significantly improve service across the distribution system. Water pressure is steadily recovering in many areas.

A water boil advisory remains in effect for customers in the affected area. An interactive map to determine affected addresses has been posted at the link in bio.

Please conserve water whenever possible. The advisory will remain in effect until water quality testing confirms the water is safe and an official notice has been issued lifting the advisory.

Water quality sampling began last night in areas where water pressure has returned to normal and will continue throughout the day. Once laboratory testing confirms there has been no contamination, the water boil advisory will be lifted.

Crews will be flushing fire hydrants throughout the affected area. Residents may observe water being discharged from hydrants as crews work to restore water quality and remove any air or sediment from the system. This is a normal and necessary part of the recovery effort.

Forsyth County and the City of Winston-Salem are partnering to provide bottled water to residents affected by the recent water service disruptions at the following locations (while supplies last):

Kennedy High School
Kernersville Elementary School
Walkertown High School
Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office

Each site will operate as a drive-thru. To help as many households as possible, distribution is limited to one case of bottled water per vehicle.

UPDATE: Kernersville has 2 pallets of water left and will remain open until all is given away or until 5 p.m. The other locations are out of water for today and are now closed.

ORIGINAL POST: Forsyth County and the City of Winston-Salem are partnering to provide bottled water to residents affected by the recent water service disruptions.

While water service continues to improve across the community, bottled water distribution sites will be available to help meet the immediate needs of residents. Officials have advised residents in the affected areas to boil their water or use bottled water until further notice.
