Care and handling of pears.

Pears can and will bruise a lot easier than other fruit and require more care in transporting, receiving, storing, and merchandising than their fall harvest counterparts, the apples. Pears can be stored in your cooler or on a dry rack.

Pears are fruits that generally do not carry the first in, first out (FIFO) rule, as riper pears should always be put out first on grocery displays.

Try not to “mound” pears too high, as the weight will damage the fruit, especially when the fruit is on the riper side. To create a friendly, mass look of pears, use false bottoms to prevent deep packing instead of spreading out on the fruit to give it a full look.

After three weeks of increases that took the benchmark price used for most fuel surcharges up by about 50 cents per gallon, the price announced Monday by the Department of Energy/Energy Information Administration fell 2.4 cents per gallon to $5.317.

Even after the big increases of the past week, the current price remains about 50 cents less than its all-time high of $5.81 a gallon set on June 20. Source: FreightWaves, DOE/EIA

To ensure that fresh produce gets to where it needs to go means a consistent temperature from the first refrigeration, during transit, all the way to the market. From refrigerated warehouses in production areas, goods need to be transported at stable temperatures on refrigerated trucks (reefers), to commercial or centralized warehouses, which also needs to be temperature-controlled.

The produce supply chain is riddled with complexities but one way to simplify the process and deliver temperature-sensitive products with ease is to use technology. Carriers should empower suppliers and offer visibility into their shipment. We are your partner with the right technology in place, instant delivery notifications, real-time temperature updates and temperature reports.

You can count on TTS to safely transport your produce.

Weathering nearly three years of the COVID-19 pandemic, consumers are looking toward the 2022 holiday season with new habits, rituals and expectations for winter celebrations ahead, finds a new report from FMI — The Food Industry Association.

The final report, in a six-part series on U.S. grocery shopping trends in 2022 that includes analysis from The Hartman Group, the "U.S. Grocery Shopping Trends 2022: Holiday Shopping" report reflects an online study of a nationally representative sample of 1,718 adults from Oct. 1-6, 2022.

"Food is the centerpiece for so many of our holiday gatherings. Despite inflationary pressures, consumers are determined to enjoy the festivities this year as they normally do," Leslie Sarasin, president and CEO of FMI said in a news release. "The food industry is working tirelessly to keep costs down and to ensure that our timeless traditions can continue during this holiday season."

Oranges place in the top five for popularity in the household alongside apples, bananas, strawberries, and grapes.

Understanding what makes an orange consumer tick is essential: Are they more concerned about price or quality? Those who purchased oranges in the last three months are 26% more likely to be influenced by quality than the non-orange crowd and 21% more likely to be influenced by price, according to Execulytics consumer research.

Also, orange consumers are 74% more likely to be influenced by seasonality concerns. As a top-five fruit, shopkeepers should take great care (high-quality, low-priced, in-season orange) when creating an orange offer.

In North America, in-season oranges are generally available in the winter and spring. If consumers demand U.S.-grown, high-quality oranges, then a “high level of care” could give the customers exactly what they are demanding.
