Winter Storm Fern is unleashing widespread chaos across the U.S. right now — a massive, potentially historic winter storm that's already causing major disruptions from the South through the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast. ❄️⚠️🌨️
Impacts kicked off today (Friday, Jan 23, 2026), with heavy snow (up to 20+ inches possible in some areas), sleet, dangerous freezing rain, and ice accumulations (up to 1+ inch in the Deep South) leading to power outages, downed trees and lines, road closures, flight cancellations (hundreds already grounded), and severe travel hazards. Over 230 million people — roughly two-thirds of the country — are in the path, affecting key freight corridors like I-75, I-40, I-20, I-35, and more. States have declared emergencies, shelves are emptying, and this multi-day event (through Monday) includes a post-storm Arctic blast that could cause dangerous refreezing.
**Critical notes for our professional truck drivers:**
Your safety — and the safety of everyone sharing the road — is our #1 priority. **No freight is worth a human life.** Do NOT push through hazardous conditions.
- If roads ice over, visibility drops to near-zero, bridges/overpasses freeze, or authorities/DOT advise against travel — **pull over safely at a secure spot and wait it out**. Delays are temporary; safety isn't.
- Reduce speed dramatically, increase following distance (10+ seconds minimum), avoid sudden braking/acceleration, and skip cruise control entirely on slick surfaces.
- Black ice is invisible and deadly — treat wet-looking pavement with extreme caution, especially on elevated roads.
- Pre-trip checks are mandatory: Tires (tread, pressure, chains if needed), brakes, lights, antifreeze levels, fuel anti-gel, and drain air tanks daily in freezing temps. Pack an emergency kit with blankets, extra food/water, fully charged phone/power bank, flashlight, and warm layers.
- If you get stuck: Stay in your cab, run the engine periodically (with exhaust clear to avoid CO buildup), and reach out for help.
- Monitor NWS alerts, state DOT road reports, and your dispatch in real time — be ready to reroute or shut down.
**Additionally, please make sure to always communicate with our office staff about any events or changes in your status.** As long as there's live, open communication between drivers, office staff, and our customers, everything will stay on track and manageable. Keep us updated — we're here to support you every step of the way.
