Congress passed the National Interstate and Defense Highways Act to build 41,000 miles of interstate highways. The federal government paid 90% of construction costs while states paid 10%. The interstate highway system has since become a strategic method of transporting hazardous and non-hazardous materials.

Blaine Pascal, French mathematician and physicist, was born. He laid the foundation for the modern theory of probabilities. In hydrodynamics, he formulated what came to be known as Pascal's law of pressure. He also invented the syringe and hydraulic press. Pascal also invented the first digital calculator to help his father with his work collecting taxes.

May 29, 1919 Albert Einstein's theory of relativity was proved by Sir Arthur Eddington, British astrophysicist, when a solar eclipse permitted observation of bending starlight passing through the sun's gravitational field. This was a key prediction of Einstein's theory that gravity affects energy in addition to a similar effect on matter. 🤔
