An ammonium nitrate explosion occurred at the West Fertilizer Company storage and distribution facility in West, Texas. Fifteen people died. 200 were injured and more than 150 buildings were damaged or destroyed. Of those who died, 10 were first responders and 2 were civilians who volunteered to help fight the fire. A lack of regulation and information provided to firefighters contributed to the high death rate.
