A lof of people have been asking us what is going on with Kilauea. Eruptions have become less predictable and right now we have run to Halemaumau Crater with camera gear several times, thinking something big was going to happen, and it hasn't.
Thank you to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park for giving us this update in a clearer format than the USGS page. We will have to all wait and see what is next.
Let's try this again with the park map and closure better marked. (It has been a busy Thursday!)
⛔Due to a flurry of earthquakes below the summit of Kīlauea and increased volcanic unrest, the Keanakākoʻi area is temporarily closed for safety. This includes old Crater Rim Drive, the overlooks near Keanakākoʻi crater and Crater Rim Trail to Keanakākoʻi. Devastation parking lot remains open.
🌋The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports that a shallow intrusion of magma occurred overnight within the summit region near the existing eruption location. The north and south vents continue to have intermittent overflows, spatter, and strong glow.
Nearly 100 earthquakes were recorded in the summit area, the largest being magnitude 3.4 at 9:52 p.m. last night. Intrusive activity was strongest between 8 p.m. September 30 (last night) and this morning around 3 a.m.
Since 3 a.m. today, October 1, summit inflation has flattened out and earthquake activity has decreased. A comparison of we**am imagery before and after the intrusion does not show any new ground cracking or eruption of lava in a new location.
