Nice work and well earned ASBP!!!!!! Your airport and fellow tenants are super proud of you guys!!!
Join us in recognizing the crew of CGNR 1719 from U.S. Coast Guard Airsta Barbers Point for recently being awarded the 'Elmer Stone Award' at the 2016 Coast Guard Aviation Association Ptero Roost.
Given for excellence in fixed-wing aviation, the award is named after Cmdr. Elmer F. Stone. Stone was the first Coast Guard aviator and among many other accomplishments was the pilot and navigator on the first trans-Atlantic flight.
The crew received the award for helping save the lives of five fishermen who went missing off the small island of Teraina, approximately 1,000 miles south of Oahu.
After flying almost 30 hours in just three days, the crew utilized on scene initiative to adapt their search plan to incorporate local drift data provided by local sailing vessels. The crew located the small skiff, which had no motor or lights, 200 miles from shore. Immediately they dropped survival supplies and a raft while trying to locate a nearby AMVER vessel to assist the five fishermen.
Shortly after, the crew returned to Christmas Island to refuel the aircraft since they were incredibly low. Knowing the small skiff was still at sea the aircrew took minimum crew rest and requested a waiver from the commanding officer to depart Christmas Island early the next morning to assist the AMVER vessel.
With the weather worsening, it made the small skiff nearly impossible to spot by a surface vessel even though it was less than a mile away.
The Coast Guard aircrew managed to relocate the skiff and drop flares to vector in the AMVER vessel who successfully rescued the five men.
Bravo zulu, shipmates!
