We have very exciting news! The Kansas City Downtown Airport’s Federal Aviation Administration Air Traffic Control Tower has started Mobile Clearance. What is Mobile Clearance? Mobile Clearance lets general and business aviation pilots request and receive digital IFR departure clearances directly through approved flight apps like ForeFlight and Garmin Pilot app. By using the Mobile Clearance, pilots do not have to talk on their radio which frees up controller workloads and radio congestion. This Mobile Clearance will become handy during those very busy days at MKC. Below are two videos that give more insight.

Who would have thought our snow crews would have to do snow removal in August? This morning’s storms covered some of our taxiways with up to 3” of hail. Unfortunately, a utility pole was destroyed as well knocking out power to portions of the airport. Evergy is hard at work trying to restore power as soon as possible. As such, the 100LL self-service fuel tank is out of service until power is restored.

Happy Birthday to Kansas City Downtown Airport! On this day 99 years ago, Charles Lindbergh hand picked the location of the present day airport. The Kansas City Downtown Airport’s mission has evolved throughout the years and still is dedicated to serving the people of Kansas City and the region. We are excited to start the planning for a big 100 year birthday celebration for next year!

(For those who are wondering who is in the picture - that is Charles Lindbergh giving our current Director of Aviation a handshake for a job well done)

Taxiway B update. We are almost two weeks in from the start of Phase 2 and things are moving along. All of the required demolition has been completed. New drainage and electrical work has begun with taxiway sub-base work to start on Monday. Runway 22 really enjoys the wide range of traffic that it is seeing during construction. Thank you to our Federal Aviation Administration control tower and all of the pilots operating safely on Runway 22.
