Tech Tips- Starters

Ever hit the start button and you get the spinning sound or even worse, that grinding sound? That’s usually a bad starter clutch. The clutch is what controls the jackshaft and pinion gear that engages with engine to turn it so it starts. If that clutch starts to get weak it will not shoot the jackshaft hard enough to get the pinion to engage so it just ends up grinding. The more it grinds the more chewed up the pinion gear gets. Or, it’ll just not shoot the shaft at all and just spin, which is where that spinning whine comes from. In this case we decided to go ahead and change out the starter clutch since the old pinion gear was caught slipping by some of the staff. It’s a 2011 Dyna so it’s not necessary to remove the inner primary. Theoretically it’s not even necessary to remove the outer primary because the starter is not connected like in some of the older bikes. But it would be a PITA to pull the starter without a little love tap from the front to back it out 😉. Make sure you don’t lose the little steel ball that comes with the new clutch. It goes inside. Make sure you use a good assembly l**e to help keep everything together. A little l**e goes a long way 😎

We’re back!!! They say whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. First project of the year is the restoration of the motorcycle belonging to Lionel Ricks, founder of the. Chosen Few motorcycle club. It’s a KZ1000 motor married to an 82 softail frame with custom front end. Many custom innovations were added by the “Father”, as Mr. Ricks was lovingly known, including extra gas tank and battery operated stereo with am AND fm radio! Stay tuned for updates on this project and other news about what’s happening on the Dock 😎
