❄️ Friday night brings the first hard freeze of the fall — down to 29° in Juneau. If your boat isn't winterized yet, this is the weekend to handle it. A cracked block costs a whole lot more than a winterization.

With the start of the 2026 duck hunting season, I'm excited to get back into the marsh - where I belong! There's nothing like the crisp morning air, the sound of wings overhead, and the lifelong memories made with friends, family and a good dog by your side.

One of the things I love most about duck hunting is that it doesn't end when the birds are in the bag. It continues in the kitchen, where we get to enjoy the delicious, wild meat that our hunts provide.

I'm excited to share one of my favorite waterfowl recipes with you - a simple, flavorful dish that celebrates the tradition, the harvest, and the amazing taste of duck! Connie

🌬️ READ THE WIND, HUNT SMARTER!

Are you letting the wind work FOR you or AGAINST you?

When it comes to successful duck hunting, wind direction can be just as important as your decoy spread, calling and concealment!

Understanding how ducks use the wind can make a big difference in getting those birds to finish right where you want them.

🦆 WHY WIND MATTERS

Ducks generally prefer to land into the wind. It helps them slow down, maintain control and make a smoother landing.

Knowing this can help you anticipate their approach and position your decoys for better opportunities.

🎯 SET YOUR DECOYS FOR SUCCESS

✅ Pay attention to wind direction before setting up.

✅ Position your decoys to create an inviting landing zone.

✅ Leave an open pocket where approaching ducks can comfortably land into the wind.

✅ Consider your blind location and shooting lanes when planning your spread.

✅ Don't be afraid to adjust your setup if the ducks aren't finishing!

🌬️ DIFFERENT WINDS, DIFFERENT STRATEGIES

🟢 Light Winds: Ducks may approach from different directions or circle several times before committing. Natural-looking decoy placement and movement can help.

🟡 Moderate Winds: Often provide favorable conditions for predictable approaches and natural decoy movement.

🔴 Strong Winds: Ducks may seek sheltered water and approach differently. Adjust your spread and setup to match the conditions.

💡 PRO TIP: Don't just watch where ducks are flying. Watch how they're reacting to your decoys! Sometimes a small adjustment to your landing pocket makes all the difference.

🦆 Remember, successful waterfowl hunting isn't always about having more decoys. It's about knowing where and how to use them!
