Happy Historic Preservation Month!
Every May, preservation of historic places is celebrated through events that promote historic locations & heritage tourism. This month is also about recognizing the social and economic benefits of historic preservation. There are 100+ historic sites in Tennessee, and we encourage you to visit one this month!
Indian Mountain State Park may not be recognized as an official historic site but that does not mean it has no historic value. The park was the site of one of the last strip-mining operations in the area that left the land barren. The State of Tennessee partnered with the town of Jellico to invest in the land, which commenced a decade long land reclamation project. This land reclamation project was successful and established Indian Mountain State Park in 1971, becoming a place loved by many.
