Our last stops in Missouri were Hawn’s Mill and Adam-ondi-Ahman. Hawn’s Mill was basically just a big open field but it was quiet and peaceful. It’s hard to imagine the horrific events that occurred there.

Adam-ondi-Ahman is one of the more beautiful places I’ve ever seen! It was so green and every inch was covered with grass and flowers and trees. There are several short walking trails that take you out to a view of the valley and the spirit is strong and peaceful!

We tried to stake out a spot for the events that will happen there in the not-so-distant future but apparently they’re not taking reservations! 😉 We did contemplate moving nearby just to make the walk a little shorter.

Our favorite stop here was the Liberty Jail visitors’ center. The original jail no longer exists so the church rebuilt it in its original location and built the visitors’ center around it. It was neat to see the structure and be reminded of the things that happened to Joseph Smith and Hyrum here. Things were cold and miserable but their faith never wavered! My favorite part was the way you could see the photo of the Savior through the bars of the jail.

We also visited the Far West Temple site and spent some time exploring the nearby Amish town of Jamesport. It was cool to see the horse drawn carriages on the street and we brought home some of yummy things from the Amish grocery store to try.

After leaving Utah, our goal was to get to the northeast as quickly as possible in order to visit all the places we wanted before it got too cold for trailer living. We left several weeks later than we’d hoped so we made the 36 hr drive (by car but quite a bit longer when pulling a trailer) in just 2 weekends.

Our one stopping place along the way was Independence, Missouri. The RV park we stayed in was actually on the same block as the church Independence visitor’s center. We enjoyed our time there! Two sweet sister missionaries showed us around and told us the early church history in that area. We also visited the nearby 3 Witnesses and 8 Witnesses monuments and the old cemeteries where they stand.

The Community of Christ’s temple is right across the street and it’s a pretty cool building!

While we were home, we had fun visiting friends and family, watching movies (the girls and I read Where the Crawdads Sing together and were excited to see the movie), visiting the traveling tabernacle, went school shopping and spent a day at Lagoon. The kids also started a new year of school and David started a new job! We did some spring cleaning in the trailer (took some things to storage to free up space) and did some projects we’d been holding out on. It was a fun, busy couple of weeks! Toward the end we got a little stir crazy and were antsy to get back on the road.

Next stop…HOME! We had a family reunion camping trip on the calendar and a few other things in the agenda. First up…Mirror Lake with the Barraclough clan. This year didn’t end up going as planned. One sister’s family got Covid at the last minute and my parents couldn’t come because of their recent mission call. So it was just us and a couple stragglers than made it. We hauled the trailer up and SOMEHOW David got it into that tiny campground! It was a tight fit!! But once there we had a ball. Lots of fun food, campfire songs, fishing and games. It rained a lot of the time so the kids that had planned to stay in tents ended up sleeping inside. But we managed to have a great time anyway!

None of us had ever been to Glacier National Park but we were excited to go! It’s been on my bucket list for a long time and it’s not that far from home so we definitely should have gone sooner. It did not disappoint! We did several short hikes, drove Going To The Sun Hwy and took in the amazing views along the way, had a snowball fight in the middle of summer and ate huckleberry ice cream cones almost every day. We spent 4 days exploring the park and loved every second of it!

While visiting Glacier, our campground was within about 100 yds of 2 beautiful lakes - Big and Little McGregor. They were both so picturesque and calm and the water was surprisingly warm. The kids had a great time swimming, playing on their paddle boards and catching crawdads.

We visited Mt. Rushmore 15 yrs ago but decided it was time to go again! The girls were little the first time and Barrett wasn’t even born so it was basically new to all of them. And it was as impressive as I remembered it! Just gives you that patriotic pride in your heart! The kids did the junior ranger program and we had a picnic nearby afterwards and could see George Washington’s profile from our table. We also drove out to Crazy Horse but it was later in the day so we just snapped some pictures as we drove by. If they ever get it finished, it will be amazing!

Just outside of Badlands was a place that you could buy peanuts and feed the prairie dogs. We drove by it at first but Barrett was adamant that we turn around so we did. And it was so much fun! They get plenty of food and so weren’t overly interested in the peanuts but they were so used to humans that they let us touch them! They are so fun to watch as they run and play with each other. We had a great time and could have stayed there all day!

I’d never heard of Badlands NP but it was within an hour of Mt. Rushmore so we decided to check it out. And it was pretty cool! Very Grand Canyon-esque. Not quite the same scale but the same feel. We enjoyed the scenery (rock cliffs on one side and green prairies on the other) and climbing on some of the rock formations! Not many animals except TONS of prairies dogs which are so much to watch. It’s a definite must-see if you’re ever in the area.

We came to South Dakota to visit Mt. Rushmore. But first…Wind Cave National Park! I’d never heard of it before but it was very cool! We walked through the cave and enjoyed the cooler temperatures and seeing the rare boxwork formations that it is known for. We also loved driving around the park looking for deer, buffalo and prairie dogs!

We drove Trail Ridge Road all the way through Rocky Mountain NP. It is the highest continuous paved highway in the country and at the highest point is over 12,000 feet above sea level! As you can imagine, that makes for some spectacular views. We enjoyed the drive and the cute little town at the other end of it.

We visited the Holzwarth Historic site where a family owned a guest ranch in the park starting in the early 1900s. It is now home to park rangers but they let you walk through some of the old buildings and show you how they lived in them over a century ago.

The weather in the park is super unpredictable. On the first day we got almost back to our car from a short trek when it started to drizzle and then pelt us with hail! We were drenched in just a few minutes! We headed back home at that point but within a short time it had almost totally cleared up and the sun was shining! We soon learned to just to sit them out and continue on with our day. There was one hike across the tundra, that’s unique to this park, that had signs warning you to turn back if there were any signs of lightning. We tried to do it multiple times but there was always a storm brewing on the horizon so we never got to go!
