This day of recognition was established in 1939 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to honor pioneers in aviation, including Orville and Wilbur Wright, Amelia Earhart, and Charles Lindbergh. The date, August 19, was chosen because it is Orville Wright’s birthday.
