Most organizations track and use safety data, and for good reason, but data alone doesn't protect people. Incident trends, operational testing results, and risk assessments can help reveal where risk may exist and where greater attention is needed.

Our Track to Zero Safety Marathon continues with Week 12: Staying Vigilant.

A strong safety culture requires our attention every day. Conditions change, risks evolve and even familiar tasks can present new hazards. What was safe yesterday may not be safe today.

Staying vigilant means taking the time to assess the task, recognize changing conditions and speak up when something doesn’t look right.

Safety is more than awareness. It’s action:
• Stay alert to your surroundings throughout every shift.
• Take time to identify hazards before beginning a task.
• Verify the proper controls are in place before moving forward.
• Communicate potential hazards with your team.
• Challenge unsafe conditions or behaviors before they lead to an incident.
• Never let familiarity with a task turn into complacency.

At Patriot Rail, every employee plays a role in keeping our operations safe. Stay aware. Speak up. Never assume.

Summer storms tested several railroads across the Patriot Rail network this year, but our Maintenance of Way teams were ready.

From the Louisiana and North West Railroad to the Keokuk Junction Railway and Blue Ridge Scenic Railway, these dedicated employees worked through challenging conditions to repair washouts, restore service, and keep our customers and communities connected.

Their expertise, teamwork, and commitment embody what it means to be part of .

Our Track to Zero Safety Marathon continues with a return to a topic so important, we're reinforcing it twice this summer: Derail & Wheel Chock Awareness.

When it comes to preventing unintended equipment movement, consistency matters. Knowing the procedure is important. Following it correctly, every time, is what keeps our people and operations safe.

This week, we're reinforcing a few critical habits:

• Chock wheels before uncoupling or performing work on equipment.
• Inspect wheel chocks for cracks, wear or damage before each use.
• Verify derails are in the proper position before entering a track or moving equipment.
• Never move equipment over a derail.
• Report damaged or missing safety devices immediately.
• When in doubt, STOP and verify.

Revisiting these practices isn't about repetition for repetition's sake. It's about making the right safety steps second nature.

Every movement. Every check. Every time.

Stay alert. Stay safe.

Our Summer Spike Program and Track to Zero Safety Marathon continue with Week 10: Defensive Driving Awareness.

Whether behind the wheel at work or on the way home, every safe trip starts with a conscious decision to stay alert.

Defensive driving means being prepared for what happens next. Traffic, weather, road conditions and the actions of other drivers can change quickly. Staying focused, maintaining space and anticipating potential hazards give us more time to recognize risks and react safely.

This week, remember:

• Stay aware. Keep your attention on the road and minimize distractions.
• Give yourself space. Maintain a safe following distance and leave room to react.
• Anticipate hazards. Scan ahead and expect conditions or other drivers to change.
• Adjust your speed for weather and road conditions.
• Avoid complacency, even on familiar routes.

At Patriot Rail, safety doesn’t stop when we leave the railroad. Stay alert. Expect the unexpected. Drive safe.
