Madrid kept us looking up! 🇪🇸

We’ve left Spain, but these buildings deserve another look.

Sweeping corners. Domed towers. Rows of iron balconies. Elaborate decorations around windows and doors. Even the underside of a roof had details worth photographing.

Some façades were grand and elegant. Others paired warm brickwork with wooden shutters and balconies overflowing with plants.

That variety was part of Madrid’s charm. Between tapas stops and busy squares, we found plenty of reasons to slow down and admire the streets around us.

A little travel advice: look above the storefronts. There’s a whole other view waiting overhead!

We had seen the protests on television. In Madrid, we saw them firsthand.

Walking through Puerta del Sol, we found tents, blue tarps and protest banners filling part of one of Spain’s most famous squares.

This was a housing protest encampment. Demonstrators were calling attention to unaffordable housing and evictions. One banner in our photos read, “Tamara se queda”—“Tamara stays”—supporting a family facing eviction in Madrid.

Around the camp, everyday life continued. Visitors took photographs. People crossed the square. Police passed through.

Our trip brought us beautiful buildings, wonderful food and plenty of b**r. It also brought us face to face with the struggles people experience in the places we visit.

Seeing a story on television is one thing. Walking through it gives you a different perspective.

We’ve left Spain, but there are still a few stories to share! 🇪🇸

Overlooking Madrid’s Puerta del Sol, this bottle with a red jacket, hat and guitar has become part of the city’s identity.

It’s the famous Tío Pepe sign, advertising a dry sherry from Jerez in southern Spain. Its slogan, “Sol de Andalucía embotellado,” translates to “Andalusian sunshine in a bottle.” ☀️🍾

Artist Luis Pérez Solero created the cheerful character in 1935. Tío Pepe means “Uncle Pepe,” a tribute to the winery founder’s uncle.

Over the years, Madrid grew so attached to the rooftop sign that the city protected it as a historic advertisement. Removed in 2011 for restoration, it returned in 2014 to a nearby rooftop overlooking the same square.

We came home with photographs. Learning the stories behind them makes the memories even better.

One last sunset from above the clouds. 🌅✈️

After a month of exploring Europe, we’re heading home with wonderful memories—and a camera roll full of stories still to share.

An unexpected return to Madrid. ✈️

A medical emergency on our flight to Boston prompted a call for a doctor on board and a return to Madrid. This eight-minute video captures our approach and landing.

Medical personnel will be coming on board to help the passenger. We’re hoping for the best for this person and everyone traveling with them. ❤️

For now, we’re staying seated and keeping the aisle clear for those who need to help.

Wheels up from Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport! ✈️🇪🇸

Goodbye, Spain—and thank you for a wonderful finish to our European adventure. More than 30 days, six countries, countless memories and plenty of great b**r and food!

Next stop: Boston! A little closer to home, with one more travel tradition waiting for us. 🦞🍺

A crescent moon above Madrid’s Royal Palace. 🌙🇪🇸

As daylight faded, the streetlamps glowed gold and the moon added the finishing touch. A beautiful evening to pause and take it all in.

One more memory from Spain to bring home. ❤️

¡Hasta luego, España! 🇪🇸❤️

After more than 30 days exploring Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, Poland and Spain, what a marvelous trip this has been!

From medieval towns and grand castles to cozy b**r halls and lively tapas bars, we’ve shared beautiful places, delicious meals and plenty of local b**rs. Along the way, we met wonderful people and made memories we’ll treasure.

Spain gave us a wonderful final chapter. Toledo’s winding streets, Madrid’s energy, sizzling garlic shrimp and one more plate of tapas made it hard to say goodbye.

From both of us, thank you for following along! Every comment, like and share meant a lot. We hope you enjoyed traveling with us as much as we enjoyed sharing the journey. ❤️🍻
