25 upgrading from a single 300 to twin 200’s. BUT FIRST - glasswork! We had to remove these splash-well pods, old rigging holes, bottom and keel repairs as well as topside dings. While we were repairing the splash-well, we took extra precaution and beefed up the rear wall and corners with extra glass where Contenders are known to crack (especially with the extra horsepower added).

We do things the right way. Not the most profitable, not the cheapest, and certainly not the fastest way - we treat every boat like it’s our own and do it RIGHT.

How about this getting a factory refinished dash for new and electronics?!

Our customer wanted to keep the boat original so we cut out the entire face of the dash. We then laminated a dash off of the boat and cut it to size to ensure a completely flat and fair face. Then we tabbed that piece in and faired it out.

After everything was sanded and prepped, we color matched the gelcoat and sprayed.

The gelcoat laid out nicely with the exception of a couple pinholes we had to fill. After a sand and buff, marine came in and did what they do best.

We are beyond thankful for our awesome customers allowing us to partner with them on these beautiful boats.

This Maverick deck had a ton of flex, the liners were cracked and the front bulk heads and stringers were damaged. The team did a bang-up job on this one. We cut the deck. removed the plastic liners, re-built bulkheads, repaired stringers, reinforced the deck lamination, installed a false floor and an open compartment system with Coosa. Then we bonded the deck down to the grid, tabbed the deck back in, repaired all the stress cracks and sprayed new non-skid to give this boat an incredibly strong front end.

re-plumbed the compartments, completed a beautiful wiring clean-up, installed a trolling motor and rub rail insert. They also replaced the old switch panel with this clean and custom panel they design, cut and wire in-house.

While most of our time is spent repairing fiberglass and gelcoat, we offer other services as well. Detailing is one of those services and it’s where we cut our teeth.

This 39FA got the works: full detail with a one-step polish and polymer.

So let’s talk marine detailing. First off, the professional ‘culture’ is kind of crazy. There’s always a new product being pitched, something new that will ‘change the game’ or a product that has new technology and will reduce labor or increase margin. Obviously, it’s all personal opinion but we have detailed hundreds, maybe thousands, of boats at this point - so we want to share our opinion.

Let’s first address ceramic coatings. Yes, they have a place. Of course we’d love to sell $10,000 coating jobs but we’ve seen how they perform and in our experience, waxing your gelcoat three to four times a year is financially equivalent to ceramic coatings and it performs better. We do recommend applying ceramic coatings on non skid - it makes cleaning the decks very easy and those often get neglected the most often. We also recommend ceramic coatings on painted boats (boats with Awlgrip or Alexseal products). Another exception are boats that have limited access or stay in the water for years at a time before the next haulout - ceramic makes sense.

How about compounds, polishes and waxes? What do I use? Well, stop buying the latest hype - especially if you’re a professional detailer. Some brands are better than others but there is no compound or polish worth paying double the industry standard. We recommend sticking to the main, tried and true brands: 3M, Presta, Mirka. Starke has also made a name for themselves, yes they’re great but very pricey.

How about tools? Two tools needed (a third if you need to sand): rotary buffer and DA polisher with forced rotation. Pros may opt for nice expensive tools but to be honest, the old harbor freight special can get the job done for the DIYer.

Detailing isn’t complex, just a ton of hard work, and there’s no way around that. No product or tool will replace a well trained detailer.

Let’s talk !

After damage has had the proper repair, comes the gelcoat. Once the is matched, sprayed and cured, we start the long and labor intensive process of sanding and blending.

First we apply a guide coat - this can be a blue dye or dry carbon powder. This coat is applied to the gelcoat and then gradually comes off as you sand. The purpose is to give a guide on how much more you need to sand an area.

400 grit sand paper is the first round of sanding. Once all the guide coat is sanded off, the area is cleaned and then we apply guide coat again and move up to 600 grit. We repeat this process moving to 800 then 1000 grit. Simple right? Well… there’s more.

First off, the sand paper matters. We strictly use 3M blue and purple finishing sand paper. This costs between $2-3 per sheet. While it is expensive the sand paper doesn’t clog as easily, it lasts longer and it gives consistent results. Okay, so just buy expensive sand paper and I’m good? Not so fast.

Technique matters. You must have even pressure, consistent passes, know when to use a block vs an orbital and prevent a repair from growing in size. Really this comes with experience and completing hundreds of repairs.

Now for the meat and potatoes. The sander. We use the 3M Xtract system. This is a new dust extraction system that runs our two pneumatic sanders (both with a 3/16). This is as good as it gets in our business - it keeps the work area virtually dustless, its quiet, cleans its own filters and most importantly gives incredible results. Other orbitals will move the dust around, clump up, lose power in the throw and cause pigtails, haziness or deeper scratches.

Once all the sanding steps have been completed we buff with a heavy compound, medium compound and then wax the repair area.

While it isn’t rocket science, there are critical steps and tools to our job - we take it seriously. We invest in top of the line tools and materials because we work on top of the line boats.

Most of it does come down to the person behind the tools - their experience and training. We have the best of the best in that area too. Call us today for a quote! 904 508 5125

We want to give a quick shout out to Paul and Adam at

If you are considering decking on your boat you need to talk to them - There are a lot of products out there when you start researching boat decking… Adam will walk you through where their product stands in all of it. They conduct business similar to how Micah and I do - educate the customer, show your process and work, then leave it at that for the customer to decide.

We have been working with these guys over a year and every customer we send has been happy.

We will be trying to share some of the guys we partner with in the future. It takes a long time and many partnerships/jobs to vet out the businesses you want to associate with - but we hope to save you the trouble!

Our most common repair is damaged keels and other bottom damage. These repairs are not ones to delay, salt water works fast on exposed fiberglass!

You should ask your repair shop what products they use when repairing this type of damage. Soooo many guys out there put fillers and fairing compounds that should NEVER be used below the waterline. Yes, it is expensive to use the appropriate products, some run $350+ for a gallon. They’re more difficult to work with and tough to sand. But…. you won’t be coming back a second time.

Rob, our gelcoat technician, has been with us about 6 months and is producing amazing results like you see here. Thankful for our team and thankful for our awesome customers.

Checkout this hatch build. Original hatch was taken off during a service and misplaced - we were brought in and made this hatch in less than a week, starting from scratch. I wish you could see the complexity of contours we had to match to make this fit.

We take pride in our craftsmanship and continually try and further our knowledge of composites. Call us today for a custom part or a repair (904) 508 5125

Here’s a Whaler that came in with some hurricane damage. These pictures should show that major repair work is not a problem at Boat Brothers. Remember, fiberglass and gelcoat repair is what we specialize in and we can give you a repair that will be better than what a manufacturer service center can give you.

It is difficult to show in pictures but, was our lead on this job and nailed all the subtleties and contours of the classic Montauk hull all while not sacrificing the strength of the repair. It’s easy to hide bad repair work in social media posts but we try to give you all angles so you get an idea of the perfection we seek.

We will be closing from December 23rd-25th and reopening on the 26th. We’re looking forward to spending time with our family and slowing down for a couple days to enjoy what is important. Have a Merry Christmas!
