🚨⚠️FYI: Know the Facts Before Purchasing a DOT/MC Authority⚠️🚨
Before investing thousands of dollars into a “seasoned” or “aged” authority, it’s important to understand how the industry views ownership changes.
✅ Aged authority does not always provide the advantage many sellers claim. While the original FMCSA registration date remains on record, many brokers, shippers, and compliance platforms can see ownership changes, authority transfers, and changes in management. As a result, they often evaluate the carrier based on the date of the new ownership rather than the original authority date.
✅ Many brokers are paying closer attention to purchased authorities. Due to increased freight fraud, identity theft, double brokering, and non-domiciled carrier concerns in recent years, risk departments have tightened their onboarding requirements. A purchased authority may face additional scrutiny, delayed approvals, or outright rejection from some brokers.
✅ Compliance matters more than age. Brokers commonly review:
* Safety scores and inspections
* Insurance history
* FMCSA records
* Carrier411 and similar monitoring services
* Ownership changes
* Business legitimacy and operating history
✅ Profitability can still be challenging. Even with an aged authority, carriers may find themselves limited by broker requirements, freight fraud prevention measures, and increased compliance reviews. Purchasing an authority is not a guaranteed shortcut to premium freight opportunities.
Industry Perspective: The strongest long-term strategy is often building your own authority with a clean compliance record, solid inspections, strong broker relationships, and consistent performance. In today’s market, credibility and compliance frequently carry more weight than the age of an authority alone.
Bottom Line: Don’t purchase an authority solely because it’s advertised as “aged.” Understand how brokers evaluate ownership changes, fraud risks, and compliance history before making the investment. The real value isn’t the age of the authority—it’s the reputation behind it.
