Could the Mayport Lighthouse be lifted onto rails and moved intact to it's new location, instead of cutting it into pieces? Many other lighthouses have been moved this way.

Specialized house movers (structural relocation experts) can and have successfully moved brick lighthouses around 100 feet tall or taller.

This is a proven engineering feat, typically done to save historic structures from coastal erosion. Companies like Expert House Movers (and partners like International Chimney Corp) have relocated multiple masonry (brick) lighthouses in the US, including some taller than 100 feet.

Here are key real-world examples:

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse (North Carolina) โ€” the tallest brick lighthouse in the US at 193โ€“208 feet tall โ€” was moved 2,900 feet inland in 1999. It weighed about 4,800โ€“5,000 tons, was built of brick with a granite base, and survived the move intact with no cracked bricks. Expert House Movers handled the structural moving portion.

Other brick/masonry lighthouses moved by similar specialists include:

Block Island Southeast Lighthouse (Rhode Island) โ€” moved 300 feet in 1993 (around 66โ€“70 feet tall originally, but a solid brick example).

Cape San Blas Lighthouse (Florida) โ€” relocated 12+ miles in 2014 by Ducky-Johnson House Movers (a brick tower with associated structures).

Gay Head (Aquinnah) Lighthouse (Martha's Vineyard, MA) โ€” moved by Expert House Movers to prevent cliff collapse.

A 100-foot-tall brick lighthouse is well within the demonstrated capabilities of these experts. The process usually involves:

Carefully excavating underneath to install steel beams and hydraulic jacks.

Lifting the structure slightly.

Placing it on a system of rails or mats.
Slowly pushing/rolling it (often just a few feet at a time) to the new site.

Lowering it onto a new foundation.

Challenges depend on factors like the lighthouse's exact condition, foundation type, soil, distance to move, and terrain โ€” but height alone isn't a barrier (taller ones have been done). For a hypothetical 100-footer, it would likely be feasible with proper engineering, permits, and funding (these projects often cost millions and take months/years of planning).
