Everything is produced in-house, aiming to bring back Mother Nature's Way. Twisted Luck Produce started with a tradition from the Mann Family of producing a vegetable garden to provide fresh vegetables for our family throughout the year. Having to deal with a business, and do financial planning, marketing, optimization, logistics, etc, I felt that this would be a fun and exciting way to put my schooling to work, and my work to school! Most companies publish an environmental report once a year. We update ours every week.

Every pound of organic material that comes through our gates — manure, food scraps, yard waste, coffee grounds, restaurant scraps — gets weighed, logged, and tracked. And every time we add an entry the numbers on our environmental report page update automatically.

No annual PR document. No polished summary released in January to make last year look good. Just a live running total of what we've actually done — updated every single week as the inputs come in.

We're on track to meet or beat last year's numbers. 2025 was our best year yet. 2026 is shaping up to top it.

Last Sunday of August.

Hard to believe summer is almost behind us. It came in hot and it's going out the same way — but there's something in the air this weekend that feels like a corner turning.

The farm had a good summer. Not perfect. Never perfect. But good in the ways that matter. Orders shipped. Conversations started. Five Jackson yards that are slowly, quietly becoming something different underground. A farm stay that had its first guests. Same street. Same rain. Same sun all summer. One lawn is green and thick. The one next door is thin, patchy, and struggling through August.

Most people assume it's the grass seed. Or the irrigation setup. Or some expensive lawn service the neighbor is paying for that they don't know about.
It's almost never any of those things.

The difference between the lawn that thrives in August and the one that struggles is almost always two inches underground. The biology. The structure. The microscopic workforce that either exists in that soil or doesn't.

Here's what's actually happening in the lawn that's winning:
The soil has aggregate structure — tiny pore spaces created by years of fungal threads and bacterial activity that hold water like a sponge and release it slowly to roots during dry periods. Those roots go deep because the biology has made the soil hospitable at depth. The grass plant has access to water and nutrients that the struggling lawn next door can't reach even when you water them both the same amount.

The struggling lawn has compacted, biologically depleted soil. The roots stay shallow because there's nothing below the surface to support deeper growth. When rain stops — stress starts immediately. No reserves. No depth. No biology doing the work underground.

You can water a depleted lawn twice a day and it will still struggle in August. Because water doesn't fix the biology problem. It just delays the stress.

Six weeks in. Here's what the Luck of the Lawn is showing us.

The Kever, Watt, Day, Irigoyen, and Langley families are six weeks into their first season of biological soil treatment. We've been back out to each yard. We've been watching. And the soil is starting to talk.

Here's what we're seeing across the five yards:

Color is shifting. Not dramatically — not overnight. But the treated areas are holding a deeper green than the surrounding untreated sections of the same yard. That color difference is chlorophyll density. Chlorophyll density is a direct reflection of nutrient availability. Nutrient availability is biology at work.

Recovery is faster. A couple of the yards had areas that were stressed going into the treatment program — thin coverage, slow growth, the kind of patches that reseed every spring and still come back bare. Those areas are responding. Not fully recovered — six weeks isn't a full season — but responding in a way they haven't before.

The soil itself is changing. When we pull a plug in the treated areas versus the untreated buffer zones on the same property the difference is starting to be visible.
The treated soil is darker. More crumbly. Less compacted at the surface. The biology is building structure.

We said at the start we'd document the honest story — the good, the complicated, and the surprising. Six weeks in the story is cautiously encouraging. The biology is establishing. The foundation is building. The before photos are going to mean something by October.

Every nature documentary shows the same thing — the predator moves through the herd, past the strong healthy animals, and locks onto the one that's lagging. The one that's weak. The one that's struggling to keep up.
Your garden pests work exactly the same way.

There's a measurement called Brix — it tracks the sugar and nutrient density in plant tissue. High Brix plants have elevated sugars, complete amino acid profiles, and complex carbohydrates that make their sap nutritionally useless to most insects. The pest's digestive system literally cannot process high-Brix plant material efficiently. So they move on.

Low Brix plants are a different story. Incomplete nutrition. Simple sugars. Diluted sap that insects can digest easily and thrive on. That's the plant they target. That's the zebra falling behind.

Here's the part most gardeners and farmers never hear — Brix is almost entirely determined by soil biology. Not fertilizer. Not spray programs. Biology.

Late August Sunday.

The horses are doing what horses do on a hot Tennessee afternoon. Bryson found a way to be in the pool before noon. Danielle has something on the stove that smells like it's going to be a good evening.

Fall is coming. Your pasture knows it before you do.

Grass root systems begin preparing for dormancy in late August and September — storing carbohydrates, deepening roots, building the reserves that determine how early your pasture comes back in spring and how strong it comes back through the season.

What's happening in your soil right now directly determines what happens in March.
Operations with strong soil biology going into fall are building deeper root reserves than their neighbors. The microbial activity that keeps nutrient cycling active through late season — past the point where synthetic programs have typically been shut down for the year — is compounding organic matter and biological structure that shows up as earlier green-up and stronger early production next year.

The fall application window is one of the most underutilized opportunities in pasture management.

An extract application in late August or September establishes biology in the root zone during the period when grass is most actively moving energy downward into the root system. Those organisms overwinter in the soil profile and come back active in spring — weeks ahead of operations that didn't establish them going into fall.

Earlier grass in spring means earlier grazing. Earlier grazing means your hay bill drops before it even starts.
