OLAM TRANSPORTATION INSIGHTS
Useful information for smarter travel.
HOW EARLY SHOULD YOU REALLY LEAVE FOR THE AIRPORT?
Your flight is at 8:00 AM.
What time should your car arrive?
It sounds like a simple question, but experienced travelers know the answer involves much more than calculating the distance between home and the airport.
A 45-minute drive does not always mean a 45-minute trip.
Traffic patterns, weather, construction, terminal congestion, the day and time of travel, whether your flight is domestic or international, and even the number of passengers and amount of luggage can all affect how much time you should allow.
The better approach is to plan backward from your flight.
START WITH YOUR AIRPORT ARRIVAL TIME
Before deciding what time to leave home, determine when you should be at the terminal.
Check your airline’s current recommendation for your particular flight, airport and destination. International travel will often require more time than domestic travel, and busy travel periods can change what might normally be a comfortable schedule.
Once you know when you want to arrive at the airport, work backward from there.
DISTANCE ISN’T THE SAME AS TRAVEL TIME
Two trips covering the exact same distance can have very different travel times.
A drive to JFK early in the morning may look completely different later in the day. Rush-hour traffic, accidents, road construction, weather and major events can quickly change the equation.
That is why experienced transportation planning considers not only where you are traveling, but when.
BUILD IN A REALISTIC BUFFER
The goal isn’t to arrive unnecessarily early. It is to avoid creating a schedule in which one unexpected delay puts the entire trip at risk.
A reasonable buffer can provide valuable flexibility when traffic conditions change or something takes longer than expected.
And on important travel days, a little extra time is usually much easier to manage than too little.
DON’T CONFUSE PICKUP TIME WITH BOOKING TIME
These are two different decisions.
Your pickup time determines when you leave for the airport.
Your booking time determines whether the vehicle and service you need are available in the first place.
Holidays, school breaks, major events, cruise schedules, convention periods and other high-demand dates can affect transportation availability. Reserving ahead gives both the traveler and the transportation provider more time to properly prepare for the trip.
THE SIMPLEST RULE
Plan backward from the flight — not forward from your front door.
Start with when you need to be at the airport. Consider realistic travel conditions for that particular day and time. Add an appropriate buffer. Then determine your pickup time.
Good travel planning begins long before the terminal.
And sometimes, the smoothest part of a trip is simply knowing you gave yourself enough time.
