Happiness Received!

If you don't know of the Postcard Man, Lowell Joerg, now you will.

Mr. Joerg has been collecting and now redistributing postcards to their original locations for many years.

Recently we received our own little redistribution of happiness as he calls them in the form of this envelope from a long since delivered piece of airmail. Mr. Joerg found this email in California and sent it back to the airport.

Iowa City was the only airmail stop between Omaha and Chicago on the first transcontinental airmail route which went from New York to San Francisco.

The final utility bills are in! After 12 months, here's the figures for the savings from our solar array!

Runway lighting costs have been reduced 93% Building D & North T-hangars have been reduced 62%

We have saved over $12,600 over the past 12 months and have a $3000 credit to use over the winter from summer-time overproduction.

This system has far exceeded our expectations. That $12,600 reduction represents just under 3% of our operating budget and was over half of our total electrical bill budget in 2024 ($20,212).

You can learn more about the array and the project by watching this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oNVJ40QUY4&themeRefresh=1

One year ago our solar array went live! Since then we've generated 186 MWh of energy to power the runway lights and other airport buildings.

The 12month billing is not quite out, but so far we've saved over $10,000 and built up a small credit which will be used over the winter to continue to reduce our bill.

This project was made possible by funds from FAA included in the IIJA, signed into law by the Biden Administration, as well as matching grant funds provided by the Iowa City Climate Action Fund. Solar by Brandt was the prime contractor.
