⛽ Fuel prices are high and that usually means higher delivery costs for gravel, sand, limestone and other bulk materials. So how can you save money?

1. Step one - Ask your boss for more money. (Okay…. We’re kidding. 😄)

Here are a few things that actually help:

•Order more at once
If you know you’ll need another load soon, combining orders can reduce the delivered cost per ton.

•Consider alternatives
You may not always need the most expensive material. Depending on your area, limestone may be cheaper than granite, fill sand may work instead of premium sand, and recycled aggregate can sometimes replace virgin stone.

•Buy local
With bulk materials, trucking distance matters. A cheaper stone 60 miles away can cost more delivered than a slightly more expensive material nearby.

•Calculate before ordering
Too little material means paying for another delivery. Too much means paying for material you don’t need.

The goal isn’t always to find the cheapest gravel per ton it’s to find the right material at the best delivered price.

Fall is coming - and this is probably not what you want your driveway to look like.

Rain, soft ground, standing water and repeated traffic can quickly turn a normal driveway into deep mud and ruts. If your driveway is already sinking, holding water or becoming difficult to drive through, it is usually easier to fix it before the heavier fall rain arrives.

The first step is choosing the right bulk material.

For a muddy driveway or gravel road repair, the most common options are crushed stone, gravel and road base. If the ground is very soft, simply spreading a thin layer of fine gravel on top may not solve the problem. A stronger base layer is often needed first, followed by a finer material that can be graded and compacted.

**What should you put on a muddy driveway?**
For soft or unstable ground, larger crushed stone or gravel is commonly used to build a stronger base. A finer layer of crushed stone or gravel can then be added on top for a smoother driving surface.

**How much gravel or crushed stone do I need for a driveway?**
That depends on the driveway length, width and required depth. Repairing a few potholes may only require a small amount, while building a new 4–6 inch base across an entire driveway requires considerably more material.

**Can you put gravel directly over mud?**
Sometimes - but if the ground is extremely soft, the gravel may simply sink into the soil. In those cases, improving drainage, removing excessive soft material and using geotextile fabric or a larger road-base aggregate can create a longer-lasting result.

**When is the best time to repair a gravel driveway?**
Ideally before prolonged fall rain saturates the ground. Drier conditions make it easier to spread, grade and compact the material properly.

The same approach applies to gravel roads, parking areas, farm entrances, construction sites and washed-out access roads.

And not every project is a driveway. Bulk materials can also be delivered for playground sandboxes, landscaping, drainage, yard leveling and construction projects.

Heavy rain and flooding can do more damage than people expect. Washed-out driveways, standing water, soft ground, clogged drainage areas and erosion around ditches or culverts are all common problems after major storms.

Choosing the right material matters.

For a washed-out gravel driveway, crusher run or road base is usually used to rebuild and stabilize the surface before adding a finished gravel layer.

For standing water and drainage problems, #57 limestone or clean drainage rock can help move water through French drains, trenches, culverts and other drainage areas.

For low spots, washouts or areas where soil has been carried away, fill dirt is commonly used to rebuild grade and raise the area before the final surface is installed.

For erosion around slopes, ditches, culverts or areas with fast-moving water, rip rap provides larger stone that helps protect the soil from washing away.

If you run construction jobs long enough, you know how this conversation starts.

“Don’t pay for delivery. We’ll just hook up the trailer, grab the stone, and be back.”

Sometimes that works. A quick pickup of sand for a small repair? Sure. But on most jobs, self-hauling bulk materials only looks cheaper because people compare one line item — the delivery fee — and ignore the rest of the day.

That is the real issue.

The comparison is not just pickup vs delivery. It is production vs downtime.

When one truck leaves the site, that truck is unavailable for tools, crew movement, and last-minute supply runs. When one person leaves with it, that person is no longer grading, compacting, setting forms, or finishing the job. If the quarry has a line, if the loader is tied up, if the trailer is smaller than expected, or if the job takes more than one run, your “cheap” load gets expensive fast.

Dump truck pricing depends on time, distance, and site access—so poor planning quickly drives up costs. The biggest mistakes are ordering the wrong material (topsoil vs. fill dirt, wrong gravel type), underestimating quantity, and not thinking about where the truck can dump.

If you plan the material, volume, and delivery upfront, you can save hundreds of dollars on a simple project.
