This cup is worthy of a standalone post to catch your eye 😘

I know I haven’t posted much about what’s going on with me and Debbie Does Design. I finally got a diagnoses that fits a few months back of Axial Spondyloarthritis. If anyone has ever heard of Ankylosing Spondylitis, it’s basically the precursor to that. Ankylosing means vertebrae have started to fuse. Mine have not, yet. But sitting at a computer all day designing is doing more harm and just can’t do it anymore. I also have been diagnosed with something called Burning Mouth Syndrome, which has been the underlying cause of my weird mouth issues… Anyway, I don’t want to lose my connections with all of you and the pages, groups, subscribers, etc… everything I worked so hard to build. All my existing designs are still up. The website is still live. I will still be connected to that world and here to help with whatever I can as usual. But I will also be posting and sharing more than just designs and crafts. More Debbie Does Debbie. I hope you all stick around and hang out with me. See what shenanigans I get myself into. Like… coffee! Since I depend on it so much to stay awake while on all the meds I take 🖤☕️🫣

I have more info, including this cup, in my new Bio Lnk. And feel free to ask any questions! I know this sounds like a door closing, but it’s not. Things will just look a bit different. I’m not cheesy enough to say another door opens… let’s say I’m sneaking out an open basement window to go do what I want instead! 😜😆

I am THE WORST at decorating seasonally. But this year I actually remembered to put this baby out to display—a whole day before Halloween! The $15k lawsuit pillow! Although, it never actually made it that far… our “At Home Stores Copyright Infringement Settlement Agreement Pillow” doesn’t quite have the same ring to it 🤣

Two years ago, At Home Stores (a company worth a mere $2.8 billion) decided my original hand-drawn truck artwork and matching design would look great on two products in their 266 stores…without even asking me! Rude, right? 🙄 After nearly a year of throwing around spreadsheets, numbers, and lots of 4-letter words, their team of lawyers and mine (ONE! I had one lawyer—no team lol) finally settled for $21,000, around $13,000 after legal fees. We weren’t throwing a retirement party, but it did help get caught up on some bills, and I won’t complain about that.

They claimed they’d bought the rights from a “reputable design firm,” which turned out to be a not-so-reputable one-man show with a killer disappearing act. My original truck took 10 hours to draw, and then countless more hours went into turning it into nearly 500 unique versions for small businesses (and soo many dog breeds, Kelly and I about lost our marbles 🤪). Their actions didn’t just take my HARD work; they took away the exclusivity I’d worked so hard to create, and protect, for my customers.

So, here’s the “not really $15k pillow”—a sort of bittersweet trophy. This wasn’t about getting rich (trust me, if it were, we’d need to add some zeros) it was about standing up for myself and hopefully setting an example for other artists. Financially, it was barely a win, but it was a battle I was proud to take on. And hoped it might give other small creators (after overthinking how to post it for 2 years 🙈) the courage to fight for their work too, even if it means taking on the big corporate bastards who don’t have the bandwidth to audit their own morals and realize art theft is not their low-hanging fruit to leverage into their next promotion and circle back to later when they get handed their first C&D letter. They don’t get to step on our backs like their personal ladder to the top. Sometimes, taking a stand is more about creating ripples, in hopes that one day they might collectively start making big waves… or at least a wave big enough to knock down rockstar’s precious ladder. Teamwork makes the dream work, right?! 😜 💕🌊
