That “one form” for pet travel? It can be the reason a trip moves forward or gets delayed.

A pet health certificate is more than paperwork. Depending on where your pet is traveling, the requirements may involve health records, vaccines, treatments, testing, permits, airline rules, destination rules, timing windows, and in many international cases, USDA endorsement.

The tricky part is that every move is different. Requirements can vary by country, route, airline, species, travel date, and your pet’s health.

And when something is missing, incorrect, signed too early, submitted too late, or outside the required travel window, it can mean corrections, another vet visit, another submission, added costs, or adjusted travel plans.

“Will my pet be okay in cargo?”

We hear this question all the time, and we completely understand why. When your pet is part of your family, the idea of them flying separately from you can feel overwhelming.

The honest answer is: yes, cargo is safe for pets when the trip is planned correctly.

For pets who are too large to fly in cabin, cargo may actually be the safest travel option. But the details matter.

Behind every safe move are details most pet parents never see, like paperwork requirements, crate planning, airline communication, ground transport timing, security procedures, and animal welfare standards.

Recently, Karoline Brewer, Founder and CEO of AirPets International and IPATA President Elect, attended the IPATA Board Meeting, where industry leaders and committees came together to discuss the future of professional pet transportation.

A lot goes into safe pet travel long before a pet ever gets to the airport, and crate design is a huge part of that. 🐾

Karoline, Founder and CEO of AirPets International and PawHootz Pet Resort, recently coordinated a behind-the-scenes tour of Petmate for IPATA board members to better understand how their crates are developed, strengthen industry relationships, and share real-world feedback from the pet relocation side of travel.

These conversations matter.

When manufacturers and relocation professionals can speak directly, it creates space to talk through what works well, where challenges come up, and how crate innovation can better support safe, compliant travel.

For example, a crate may be great in many ways, but still not meet the specific requirements needed for certain pets or routes, including cat transport under IATA guidance. Being able to have those conversations directly is incredibly valuable.

The tour also offered a closer look at Petmate’s production process, including parts of the assembly that are done manually, and helped give more context around the thinking behind crate design.

The answer is… it depends.

Distance, timing, logistics, and your pet all play a role in what makes the most sense.

That’s why we don’t push one option over the other.

For a summer pet move, the airport question is not just “what’s closest?”

It is “what route is actually safest and most realistic for the pet?”

During the hotter months, many airlines have temperature restrictions for pets traveling in the hold or as cargo. If temperatures are too high at the departure city, connection point, or arrival airport, your pet may not be accepted for travel that day.

That is why heat embargoes need to be considered before choosing an arrival airport.

For example, El Paso may be the final destination, but it is not typically where you would book an international live animal arrival. A larger U.S. entry point like LAX or Denver may be more realistic, depending on the airline, aircraft, route, and onward travel plan.

From there, the priority is building a route that helps reduce heat risk, including looking at later arrival times when temperatures are lower and planning safe ground transport to the final destination.

The biggest takeaway: do not book the human itinerary first and figure out the pet logistics after.

For summer travel, the pet’s route needs to be planned first, with airline rules, heat restrictions, aircraft details, and entry requirements reviewed before anything is finalized.

But it doesn’t cover everything, and it definitely doesn’t make the process simple.

A lot of PCS families are surprised by what still has to be planned, paid for, or handled outside of reimbursement, especially when timing, paperwork, airline rules, crate requirements, and travel dates all have to line up.

That’s where things can get stressful fast.
