Today, Port Houston joins our community and the nation in observing Juneteenth.

On June 19, 1865, Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in our neighboring coastal city of Galveston, more than 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation, to issue General Order No. 3. This decree brought the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation to Texas, informing more than 250,000 enslaved people that they were free and establishing "an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property."

As an organization deeply rooted in the history, economy, and community of the Texas Gulf Coast, we honor the legacy of the freedmen and women who built futures here in Houston—including those who established the historic Emancipation Park just miles from our docks in 1872.

Today is a day for reflection, celebration, and a renewed commitment to the principles of equality, community, and opportunity for all.

We take action well before a storm arrives to reduce risk.

Port Houston begins operational adjustments several days in advance of potential impacts. These early actions are designed to reduce exposure and prevent incidents before conditions deteriorate.

Key actions include:
• Bays with single tiers of containers will be down-stacked/broken down, or additional empty containers will be added to the bay approximately 72 hours ahead of a storm to reduce wind exposure to single stacks.
• Securing cranes, vessels, and equipment early.
• Coordinating closely with partners across the maritime community and the Port Coordination Team (PCT) alongside the U.S. Coast Guard.

These steps are based on industry best practices and refined through real world experience.

Port Houston recently welcomed U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright and Congressman Brian Babin to the Houston Ship Channel for a roundtable discussion and tour of the Bayport Container Terminal.

Industry executives from Kinder Morgan, Targa Resources, Energy Transfer, and SBFC joined the group to discuss domestic energy expansion, infrastructure investments, and permitting reform.

As the busiest waterway in the nation, the Houston Ship Channel supports 3.4 million American jobs and generates nearly $1 trillion in annual economic benefit. The region remains central to U.S. energy security and export capacity.

Big news for the Houston Ship Channel region! Port Houston has officially launched Anchored in Action. This past week our team hosted the kickoff event to showcase our community-investment plan designed to directly match neighborhood needs with industry resources.

Developed after an extensive listening tour in 2025 that engaged over 10,000 local residents, this community-led roadmap focuses on strengthening the quality of life across 14 port-adjacent communities—from Denver Harbor and Galena Park to Pasadena and Baytown.

What’s on the horizon?
The framework outlines over 500 potential projects driven by real resident priorities, including:
🚶‍♂️ Safer street crossings near schools
🌳 Expanded green spaces
💼 Job training tailored for port careers
🏗️ Upgrades to shared community spaces

The Commitment:
Port Houston is kicking things off with a $1 million commitment in 2026 to turn these priorities into lasting impact. Industry partners, local governments, and philanthropic organizations are joining forces to maximize regional collaboration and direct resources right where they are needed most.

We don’t wait for the storm; we prepare well before it arrives.

Port Houston plays a critical role in the movement of goods across the region and the nation. Our responsibility is not only to operate efficiently, but to ensure we are ready to respond to severe weather in a way that protects people, infrastructure, and the supply chain.

For the safety of our community, we encourage you to prepare for hurricane season as well. Make sure to have an emergency supply kit handy with essentials like flashlights, batteries, a radio, and a first aid kit.

We’ve reached a major construction milestone for Port Houston’s new 75-foot hybrid tour boat.

Shipbuilders just completed the hull flip, a precise maneuver required to transition construction from the outer shell to the interior.

Cranes coordinate to lift and rotate the aluminum catamaran structure. This perspective shows the internal framing before the vessel rests right-side up.

Building the hull upside down allows welders to work efficiently on the outer plating. Now that the hull is turned over, the team can begin installing the hybrid propulsion systems, plumbing, and interior passenger spaces.

Once finished, this vessel will give public tours of the Houston Ship Channel with reduced emissions.
