CATALONIA BAYAHIBE REVIEW

Bayahíbe La Romana is a true crush for me 🤩

Catalonia Bayahibe All-Inclusive Resort is a little tropical paradise for those who dream of turquoise water, peaceful swimming, and a relaxed family atmosphere surrounded by nature. Upgrade to Privileged Deluxe for the best experience including upgraded in room amenities, access to the Terrace Restaurant available only to Privileged Guests, a dedicated beach and pool section, and additional dining reservations.

This resort sits on a beautiful white sand beach with crystal clear water and no sign of seaweed.
Experience spectacular sunsets directly into the sea.

Lush vegetation all over the resort includes colorful flowers and towering palm trees supplying more than enough shade to keep you cool. Clear and even walking paths are lit up for easy navigation and make the resort accessible to all abilities.

Several pools, restaurants, and bars will keep you entertained and satisfied. The activity staff works hard to get guests involved in games and fun. Nightly shows in the Theatre are low budget but appropriate for all ages! The buffet restaurant serves quality food with a huge focus on being allergy safe! Crepes were definitely our favorite!

Vacation is for relaxing, not 5am alarms to reserve a chair. Check out the pool at 8am at Catalonia Bayahibe where reserving chairs is not allowed šŸ˜ Where you stay matters!

I recently sailed on Margaritaville’s smallest ship and part of the line dubbed worst cruise line: the Paradise at Sea 🄄 🌓 šŸ ā˜€ļø

And yeah, I’ve got some thoughts.

For context: I booked this knowing exactly what it was… and yes, I know the ship is an old, refurbished ship from Costa Cruises.

I set out to answer one very big question...

Can an old cruise ship deliver a great vacation in 2026?

Here’s my honest breakdown:

āø»

āœ… There’s something nostalgic about this ship. The atrium feels like a throwback to a simpler time in cruising. This ship isn't trying to distract you from the ocean with over the top spectacle, instead it immerses you with the ocean with live music, classic design, and intimate spaces that feel different from anything built today.

āø»

āš ļø The layout… takes some patience. You will hit dead ends... a lot. Getting around isn’t intuitive and it takes a couple days before it finally clicks, but fortunately since it's a small ship, you'll figure it out.

āø»

āœ… Orlando, the Cruise Director, was absolutely fantastic. He brought a ton of energy, was super engaging and friendly every time our paths crossed, and was one of those CDs who seemed to be everywhere at all times. I think live music and throwback were just the Vision Jimmy Buffett set out to accomplish.

Carnival has the best Cruise Directors of any cruise line out there... and that's a hill I'm willing to die on. You may not love the line, but the entertainment is top notch.

āø»

āœ… The emphasis on adult happiness is much appreciated. With few adults only cruises, it’s nice to see a ship that, while not adults only, didn’t really cater to kids. Not everyone has kids. Not everyone wants to dodge kids running in the halls and while carrying your plates through the buffet. There were maybe 20 kids on our sailing mainly due to lack of children’s entertainment. The kids clubs are extremely small. There are two pools and one of those is adults only. Both are small and nothing fancy. Even so, it never felt crowded with the ~1,500 passengers on board.

āš ļøThe buffet was small... like, the smallest I've ever experienced on a cruise ship. But again, it’s the smallest ship with fewest passengers also so I should have been prepared. The pasta was great, the meat was all overall decent and typical for a cruise, the lines were never long, but the drink service was nonexistent. 100% self service. Staff is simply there to bus the tables.

āœ…The included food truck style spots were all great! Pizza, street tacos, sandwiches, and of course Cheeseburgers in Paradise were all fresh and made to order.
āø»

āœ… Fortunately the Main Dining Room experience was also far better. The food there was consistently good, and service was efficient.

If dinner time entertainment is important to you, this is not the ship for you.

āø»

āš ļø Specialty Dining is hit or miss. You are paying more so you expect more. Steaks not cooked to order and it seemed like a hassle if you spoke up. The steakhouse was terrible but Far Side Sushi does not disappoint.

āø»

āœ… There's great bars… if you know where to look. The License to Chill bar is my favorite onboard, it was actually a perfect spot to hear the music but also have a conversation without yelling šŸ˜†. 12 Volt Bar located in the adults only section was always too crowded with long waits.

āø»

āœ…The cabin was very functional for two but no balconies is a bummer. There were plenty of plugins and charging ports. More than enough storage and plenty of counterspace between the vanity and bathroom countertop.

The bathroom itself was old school with a shower curtain but it was big enough that the curtain wasn't trying to give you a hug the entire week, which isn't always the case on older ships like this. Larger folks would have a different experience I’m sure.

āø»

āœ… Entertainment was sufficient for us but very low tech and simple. No frills and an 80s vibe. Live music everywhere you turn and so many fun game shows. I love to people watch and having so many opportunities for passengers to participate was fun.

āš ļøāœ… The casino is small but not crowded and only gets docked for smell. It’s nonsmoking but this is the only place on the ship where I smelled that mildew, borderline sewer, smell.

āø»

āœ… The vibe is actually pretty great. Laid back and unpretentious... quick cruises like this one (out of Palm Beach, FL) are typically filled with hard working people looking for an escape from life for a few days. People aren’t here for perfection… they’re here to relax and I love that.

āø»

āš ļø Service is consistent… but not memorable. Our room steward was great as was the bar staff at the License to Chill Bar. Everything worked but nothing stood out. It felt more transactional than personal.

āø»

Bottom Line:

I had a good time. This is a simple, budget-friendly cruise that delivers what it promises…but it also feels its age in a lot of ways.

If you’re booking this for nostalgia, convenience, or simply because you love Jimmy Buffett and his Margaritaville vibe, it’s a great option.

But if you’re expecting a modern cruise experience… this isn’t it.

Manage your expectations on the front end and you'll have a great time.

I’m convinced the people who don’t get off the ship in Nassau, just don’t know where to go 🤩
