From Warehouse to Wheels: The Real Truth About Running a Box Truck Business
What does it really take to start and grow a box truck business?
On this episode of the Box Truck Hustle Podcast, host Telly Arnold sits down with Eric of EDJ Transport LLC for a real conversation about box truck trucking, hiring drivers, commercial truck insurance, dispatching, appliance delivery, claims, and running a transportation business.
This wasn't just an interview. Telly and Eric compared their experiences as box truck carriers and talked about lessons they've learned while operating in the freight industry.
From Warehouse Worker to Trucking Business Owner
Eric's journey started while working in a tire warehouse, where he was exposed to logistics and freight. After unexpectedly losing his job, he decided to put a business plan he already had in motion.
“When I got fired, I knew what I wanted to do. I had a game plan in my head about how to go about it.”
Six years later, Eric operates two and a half trucks and understands firsthand that growing a trucking company comes with challenges.
The Reality of Hiring Box Truck Drivers
Finding reliable box truck drivers was a major part of Telly and Eric's conversation.
Eric has tried Facebook, job fairs, Indeed, and other recruiting methods. They discussed why carriers need to properly screen drivers and check driving records before adding someone to their commercial truck insurance.
One bad hiring decision can affect your insurance rates, safety record, equipment, customers, and trucking business.
Telly's Commercial Truck Insurance Experience
Telly shared what happened when her trucking company was insured through Progressive.
As drivers and circumstances within the business changed, her commercial trucking insurance increased from approximately $1,100 per month to around $4,500 per month at one point.
After eventually switching insurance providers, she was able to significantly reduce the monthly cost.
It's an important lesson for anyone thinking about expanding a box truck fleet. Another truck doesn't just mean another payment. You have to consider commercial insurance, drivers, fuel, maintenance, payroll, compliance, and operating expenses.
Driving and Dispatching Your Own Trucks
Eric also shared how he manages dispatching while still driving.
Telly and Eric discussed the reality of wearing multiple hats as a small trucking company owner. You may be the owner, driver, dispatcher, recruiter, maintenance coordinator, and problem solver—all in the same week.
That's the part of starting a box truck business that social media doesn't always show.
Telly's Appliance Delivery Lesson
Telly shared her own experience with appliance delivery and one of her biggest lessons: document everything.
When you're providing final-mile or appliance delivery services inside a customer's home, pictures can be extremely important when dealing with damage claims.
Document the appliance, surrounding area, condition before delivery, and completed delivery.
Those extra pictures could help protect your trucking company if a claim is filed later.
Real Box Truck Business Conversations
Eric shared his journey from a tire warehouse to owning multiple trucks, while Telly brought lessons from her own experience as a box truck carrier.
They talked about the realities of box trucking that new carriers need to understand: drivers, insurance, dispatching, appliance delivery, claims, operating expenses, fleet growth, and the lessons that can cost you money.
The Box Truck Hustle Podcast isn't about making trucking look easy. It's about real conversations with people actually operating in the transportation industry.

Breakdowns and repairs are part of the trucking industry. We had to replace a tire, and honestly, I’m glad we caught it when we did. I’d rather pay to replace a tire now than be stuck on the side of the road calling roadside assistance later! 🚛💨

Preventive maintenance may cost you today, but a breakdown will cost you even more.

09/02/2026

Dropped the load off Monday, had to replace tires on the road, and already had another load booked for Tuesday morning. I knew this load was about to be a problem when they asked, “Can you bring the car?” Man, stay tuned…because this story gets crazy! 😂🚛

08/29/2026

Booked a load to pick up Thursday, but we couldn’t get it—so we kept it moving! Booked another load, picked it up Friday, and now we’re headed to the Midwest. Currently resting in Arkansas before we get back on the road and finish the run.

In trucking, every load won’t go as planned. You adjust, find another opportunity, and keep that truck moving! 🚛💨💰 Safe travels to everyone out here chasing it!

First partial dropped off this morning, and now we’re headed to our second delivery! 🚛💨

Two partials, one truck, and a strategy to keep those wheels moving. Let’s get it done! 🙌🏽

Today has been one of those days! 😩

We booked a one-pallet partial, headed to pick it up, and then got pulled over for an inspection. After that, I went straight into panic mode trying to figure out how to make the run make sense.

Thankfully, Shonique came through and found us a second partial! 🙌🏽 That’s why relationships matter in this industry—sometimes you need the right person to help pull everything together when the day starts going sideways.

Now we’re loaded and headed back to Houston to get this AC looked at AGAIN because this heat is not playing with us! 🥵🚛

It’s time to get some rest, reset, and hit it again tomorrow. Trucking will definitely test you, but you adjust, keep moving, and make it happen!

Unloaded in Illinois and already booked another load headed back to Houston! 🚛💨

Once we get home, it’s time to have this AC looked at AGAIN because this heat is relentless—and riding in a truck without reliable AC is not sustainable.

The work doesn’t stop, but neither do these maintenance expenses! 😩🔥

When some of our former employees, who also happen to be family, reached out and said they wanted to learn how to drive the box truck, I was excited because this is something I’ve been wanting to make time for. 🚛❤️

Telly is always sending them the jobs and showing them what they can earn, because there are plenty of opportunities in the non-CDL transportation industry. But we also want them to understand that those opportunities come with proper training. You don’t just jump behind the wheel of a box truck and think you’re ready to move freight.

They helped us during the Loews contract, but we were BUSY moving freight, so there wasn’t much time to slow down and really teach them.

Next month, we’re making the time. 💪🏾🚛 They’ll get some hands-on training and learn about safety, backing, inspections, loading, securement, and what it really takes to move freight professionally.

The opportunities are definitely out here—we just want to make sure they’re prepared to take advantage of them the right way.
