Most Americans have heard of Capri and the Amalfi Coast. Fewer have heard of Ischia.

Just a short ferry ride from Naples, Ischia is known for its thermal springs, beautiful beaches, charming towns, and a more relaxed pace than some of Italy’s better-known destinations.

One of the things I love most about Ischia is that it’s where many Italians choose to vacation. With beautiful scenery, great food, rich history, and fewer crowds than some of its famous neighbors, it’s one of southern Italy’s best-kept secrets.

Sometimes a long weekend and a nonstop flight from Houston is all it takes.

The first thing I look at when choosing a hotel for a client isn’t the room photos. It’s the map.

Can you walk to coffee in the morning?

Can you wander to dinner at night?

Can you spend an afternoon exploring without an agenda?

Some of the best travel memories happen when you’re simply experiencing a destination, not rushing from one sight to the next.

That’s why I love places like Tossa de Mar, Porto, Seville, Lucca, and Prague. They’re destinations that invite you to slow down, explore on foot, and discover something unexpected around every corner.

A few months ago, I had never played mahjong. Now I’m completely hooked.

Apparently I’m not alone.

Luxury hotels are embracing the mahjong craze with everything from social play nights to full weekend retreats. It’s a fun reminder that some of the best travel experiences aren’t always about sightseeing. Sometimes they’re about gathering around a table, learning something new, and connecting with other people.

A few properties that have caught my eye:

• The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe hosts a weekly Mahjong Social with cocktails and casual play.

Just about 90 minutes from the city, Tossa de Mar feels like a completely different world.
