Deckhand - TX and LA
A Deckhand secures mooring lines to vessels. He/she performs routine maintenance such as cleaning, chipping, scraping and painting. The use of various industrial power tools and small 3” to 6” discharge pumps is required to perform varied maintenance tasks. He/she assists in deck and equipment repairs. The Deckhand also assists in handling, hooking up and securing dredge anchors. He/she assists in monitoring the condition of wire cables, winches, pulleys, blocks, pipeline and mooring fixtures. He/she participates in changing and greasing cables and sheaves when required; clears obstructions from the cutterhead and dredge pump; and uses acetylene torch to clear debris from a cutterhead. The Deckhand performs maintenance on pontoon line such as greasing ball joint connections, and assists welders as required. May lift, carry, pull or push, miscellaneous equipment, supplies and parts weighing up to 75 lbs.

Positions available in Texas and in Louisiana.

REQUIREMENTS

Commitment to work safety and follow all safety policies and procedures.
Minimum 1 year Deckhand Experience required
High School Diploma or Equivalent
Dredging Experience Preferred
Rigging Certification Preferred
To perform specialized work aboard the Dredge and attendant plant.
Complete a pre-employment physical examination and drug screen.
Transportation to and from jobsite.
TWIC card required.

Grand River Navigation Company is the U.S. operating subsidiary of Rand Logistics Corporation. Together with our Canadian sister company, Lower Lakes Towing Ltd., we are one of the largest marine transportation service providers operating on the Great Lakes today with a combined fleet of 15 bulk freight vessel is service to over 50 customers across the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway.

Out Company has immediate openings for the position of Able Seaman - Watch aboard our US flagged self-unloading vessels. This is an opportunity for recent Maritime Academy Deck Graduates who wish to earn their Great Lakes Pilotage and work as Deck Officers on the Great Lakes.

Responsibilities

Following safe work procedures
Assist with loading and unloading of cargo
Perform duties in port such as line handling
Follow instruction from 1st Mate on various tasks such as cleaning and maintenance
Standing part of a Navigation Watch while under way

Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Passport and allowed entry into the Canada
Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) with Able Seaman Endorsement issued by the USCG
Transportation Worker Identification (TWIC) issued by TSA
Excellent communication and team work skills as well as the ability to multi-task
