RUM AND COKE 43rd Bomb Group 65th Squadron
B-24L-FO, 44-49827. On September 7 1945 the right mainwheel collapsed while landing at Ie Shima. There were no crew injuries, but RUM AND COKE was salvaged.

This is a picture of my father, James T. "Mac" McClure, Sr., who served with the 5th Air Force 43rd Bomb Group as a mechanic and crew chief and was stationed in New Guinea during World War 2. See http://kensmen.com/ for more details about the 43rd Bomb Group. He later worked as a Crew Chief for SAC (Strategic Air Command). He is interred at Arlington National Cemetery.

HISTORY:
The 43rd Bombardment Group was created over the winter of 1940-1, on
the US East Coast, training with a mix of aircraft. When the United
States entered the war in December 1941 the group carried out a number
of anti-submarine patrols off the east coast, but it spend most of the
war in the South West Pacific with the Fifth Air Force.
The group reached Sydney in March 1942, but did not enter combat
until Sep

The 43rd Bombardment Group fought with the Fifth Air Force, first from Australia and then in the campaigns that saw the reconquest of New Guinea and the Philippines.
