Hood River County Walk and Roll to School

Hood River County Walk and Roll to School This program will inspire a culture of walking, rolling and biking to school.

Hood River County Walk & Roll to School program will work...

To increase walking, rolling and biking to school, we will address a diversity of barriers to families including physical abilities, economic and cultural backgrounds. Perceived and actual concerns about safe streets, intersections and routes to school, will be addressed with better infrastructure for all ages, abilities, incomes and cu

ltural backgrounds. The program manager will build partnerships, educate stakeholders and policymakers and help to secure funding for infrastructure that makes walking and rolling to school safe and convenient in Hood River, Odell, Parkdale, Cascade Locks and the County. The program manager will offer age appropriate walking and biking education in the school curriculum. The program manager will collect travel counts at the beginning and end of the school year to evaluate program effectiveness; and create a shared map noting the traffic and safety concerns by caregivers. Thanks to the Oregon Department of Transportation Education grant for funding this program!

Hero!

Mr. Dixon, fresh off of knee surgery, took it upon himself to teach ALL the grades at Parkdale Elementary how to ride a bike and he does it with gusto.

The students hang on his every word and all of them feel included.

Over the winter, they ride balance bikes in the gym and for 3 weeks this month, they rode outside on a traffic garden course that he sets up and breaks down every day.

He also assigns student medics ⛑️ and mechanics 🔧 instilling a "we take care of each other" vibe.

Results? They have the highest ridership % of all the elementary schools, close to 99%.

Parkdale Elementary was the first school ever to host a bike-a-thon, this past Tuesday. All the kids rode laps on a fun course and raised money 🤑

The 17th->18th safe route to school will be complete next month!

The week after school, public works will finish installing:
+ 2-way bike lane on 17th Street between Sherman and May
+ 2-way bike lane on May Street between 17th and 18th
+ vehicle drop-off zones on both sides of May Street in front of the school

This project will improve safety for students and families, encourage more walking and biking, and help reduce traffic near the school.

This project began in 2023 as part of a 3-month demonstration.

22 neighbors were notified by the on Friday and we celebrated with cake pops and hot chocolate at Kickstand!
