A closer look at Lānaʻi’s famous “ghost ship.”

This is YOGN-42, a massive 375-foot U.S. Navy fuel barge built from reinforced concrete during World War II. It served in the Pacific before being retired after the war and intentionally grounded off Lānaʻi’s rugged north shore around 1950.

More than 75 years later, it still sits on the reef at Shipwreck Beach, slowly weathered by waves, salt and relentless trade winds.

From shore it looks impressive. Up close, it’s something else entirely.

Hurricane Lowell has regained Category 5 strength, with sustained winds around 160 mph. The good news for Hawaiʻi is that the current forecast still calls for Lowell to make a sharp turn northward this weekend rather than continue directly toward the islands.

For Oʻahu, the latest track is looking more encouraging, but Kauaʻi and Niʻihau remain the areas of greatest concern as Lowell approaches the western end of the island chain early next week. Heavy rain, dangerous surf, strong currents and possible flooding could affect parts of Hawaiʻi even without a direct landfall.

A powerful storm — and definitely one to keep watching closely over the weekend. Stay safe, Hawaiʻi!

🚢 There’s a shipwreck just off Hawaiʻi’s coast… so we sent the drone out to take a closer look. 🌊

From shore, you can see the wreck sitting out in the Pacific — but we wanted to know what it actually looks like up close.

So we flew the drone all the way out. 👀
