The art of lei making is deeply rewarding, but it requires time, care, and intention. Every piece of ginger in your lei is individually dehusked and opened before it can be sewn. Mixing ginger with white orchid helps stretch the ginger while keeping an elegant look, and adds a bit of hardiness to an otherwise delicate flower. PS. A quick video on how to make a rose lei! 🌹

A lot of people call a rose lei “lokelani,” and even many popular Chinatown lei shops label it that way. But technically, it’s not a true lokelani rose. Most of the time, we use small spray roses grown near Waiʻanae, they’re usually about the size of your thumbnail and work really well for lei making.

The real lokelani is actually much harder to source on Oʻahu. Over the years, many Chinatown lei shops began using spray roses as a substitute, and the name just stuck.

True lokelani roses look more like a tiny garden rose, with soft, rounded velvety petals layered in a full, rounded bloom. Its gently curved petals spiral inward, creating a classic, lush garden rose shape.

Graduation season has us running on caffeine and pure willpower, but moments like this make it all worth it. Yes, we get plenty of thank yous, and we’re so grateful. But we’re also here when something goes wrong.

A customer called, upset about her lei having so little tuberose. We’ve been having major shortages the last 3 weeks from the farm. I listened, apologized, and made it right. Later, she called back to say the lei was beautiful — and to apologize for being hard on me. I was so touched, I cried. It’s rare for someone to call just to say sorry for the way they spoke to you.

Acknowledging each other, showing care, that’s what being human is about. And it’s a powerful act of kindness.
